What are they for you? are they delusions, messages from 'god', noise, miscellaneous brain chatter, convenient symbolic language from the subconsciousness...

other than merely 'experiences', what are they as they apply to you personally?

I think I know what you're asking.

If one is practicing any form of visualisation is is usual to shut one's eyes. Just to cut down on the distractions. I'd expect a truly experienced person might be able to succeed withtheir eyes open - if they felt the need.

Sometimes they are intentional visualizations, sometimes symbolic from the unconscious (like dreams), and sometimes just memory.

When I meditate, I "visualize" a sort of movie screen in front of my closed eyes, or like my eyelids have turned into movie screens. The images are generally things that I have been thinking about, and often provide valuable insights. I try not to analyze them, but just see and remember. I'll analyze later. I call that contemplation rather than meditation.
