People addressed our checks to Mr. and Mrs. (my husband's first and last name). We had no problems cashing them. Even if a bride keeps her maiden name, the time surrounding her wedding she shouldn't mind being referred to as a Mrs.
Couples should not be cashing wedding gift checks until after the wedding. Write "wedding gift" in the For line to avoid confusion. Shower gift checks can be cashed at any time and should be made out to the bride in her maiden name.

She'll be able to cash a check in her maiden name because that is her legal name. When or if she decides to change her name, she'll have to go to the bank with proof of her marriage and change her name, so either way the bank will know her name was Miller and is not Smith. You can also just sign it to the man and write in the card that it's a gift to both of them.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. This acknowledges the fact that they are married. And amazingly, banks don't even check that closely for the names until someone files a complaint. Plus I am sure that they will be opening an account together since you won't be the only one giving a check.

Normally "Mr. & Mrs. John Smith" would still be fine-- the grrom can still deposit it.
However-- if you don't know about the bride's name plans-- she may be upset if you address her as "Mrs. Groom" if she doesn't plan to change her name.
In the "TO" check line, use the full legal name of the person you are closest to, either the bride or groom.
In the memo, you can put: "Amy and John's wedding gift. Congratulations!"

Definitely use "Or".... I keep getting checks made out with my soon-to-be husband's last name and I can't cash them. And I am keeping my maiden name for another 6 months or so because we are going to Europe and I don't want to have to wait for a new passport.

I would put their married names down if you are giving it to them at or after the wedding.
If it is a shower gift, then the bride's maiden name.

it should be "or", however you write it. that way, either one of them could cash or deposit it.
