The barrel increases the amount of pressure behind the bullet, resulting in a higher muzzle velocity. As the gas in the cartridge expands it creates pressure, the only outlet is the open end of the barrel. This gas pushes the bullet, and the longer the barrel the more time that the powder has to complete burn and reach maximum pressure. There is an upper limit to which barrel length creates higher pressure, but I do not know what it is. Anyway, the gas pressure builds up and the bullet travels faster because of it.
The barrel also has a secondary function. Rifling is cut into the barrel making grooves that the bullet is guided by. These grooves are spiraled, creating a twist, and making the bullet spin around. Similar to a football spiral. The spin helps to stabilize the bullet, allowing it to be more accurate and to follow a tight trajectory.
The last item the barrel does is allows you to place sights with wide spacing. The longer the distance in between the sights the more accurate your aiming alignment should be.

The barrel of a gun or other firearm is the tube, usually metal, through which a controlled explosion is released in order to propel a projectile out of the end at great speed.

Without a barrel you will not be able to shoot accurately at any distance, because there is nothing to keep the bullet going where you want it to go accurately to its intended target.*
