I was watching some videos . . . I'm just not sure how I feel about layover camels. It's a camel (or back camel) spin but with the head and chest facing UP. It just looks a bit awkward to me.

Do you guys feel that way about any particular move?

No offense to anyone here who like or can do any moves that get listed here . . . just an opinion.

I think there are A LOT of things in skating that because they're not done properly, they turn out looking pretty awful. :) I think layovers can be very pretty -- if they're done correctly. I've really only seen one person do them so it looked nice. Or what about sit spins with the free leg wrapped around the skating leg rather than extended out. Ewwww! Maybe I'm too "old school," but I'm not a giant fan of some of these new spin variations either. To me, and maybe I'm too "old school," it looks like you can throw together any old botched position and say, "Oh, look at the new spin I made up." haha I do think the newer focus on flexibility is good (I love the Sasha Cohen spirals, fully extended split jumps, heel stretches and spiral variations), but in an effort to be different, I think some things just look like poorly executed positions for a basic move. Nobody just does a beautiful textbook layback, sit spin or camel anymore! In a way, I think it's kind of sad and that skating has lost a little of it's purity.

Well, that's my two cents! :)

I actually love layover camels. I think they're cool.

There's this other camel spin that I've seen some skates do, where you drop your upper body and your free leg, so you're kind of like a triangle with your butt in the air. I think it looks awful.

I also think that change-edge spins, when not done well, can look very un-elegant. Some skaters do them really well, others just, don't.

Uh...yeah..I have to agree with you on the layover camel. It feels really, really akward to do the spin. Not elegant moves? Oh yeah..I got a ton.

You know that move when the girls lift their leg up backwards or frontwards on an edge? Yeah, that isn't really an elegant move, since I know it shows your flexibility, but seriously, how does that fit into your program when you're skating?!

The side toe? Really not one of the most elegant or creative footwork I have seen or done for my programs.

How about the waltz jump? Yes, yes, I know we all started learning that when we first started competing, but how akward is it to jump a waltz jump? Really akward.

Hope this answered your question :]

The so-called 'ugly spiral', where the skater lifts their leg whilst skating on a back outside edge...
The mushroom spin (spinning around bent over with their backside in the air)...
Ew.
But skating is beautiful. Seriously, the most amazing sport there ever was, is, and will be. I cherish every second I'm on the ice, and believe me, all ugly moves can look stunning, just add some breathtaking music, a fit guy, and gallons of passion (anyone know who's portrait I'm trying to paint? *winks*)!!

I kinda like layover camels (when they're done well) :)

To me, these are unelegant:
-Y spirals without a full split, or with bent knees
-besti squats
-change of edge scratch spins
-falling:)
-that horrible spin where the skater is bent in half, head down, with rear up in the air
-Ina Bauers when the skater's back is bent way over - a nice arch in the back is good, but I think it looks odd when the skater is nearly bent in half backwards

I think layover camels are really neat to watch but they most definitely are not elegant. Other things that aren't elegant to me but are necessary are change edge spins.

Yeah I agree with the layover camels...{okay so I had to go to youtube to find out what it was, but whatever}

It just looks a little strange and not "natrual"

i dont know what a layover camel is but...

i think that spin thats sometimes called a pancake spin, where you do like a sit spin but put your free leg on your other knee and tuck everything in, i think that doesnt look so great.

but i guess its just everyones personal opinion

I also agree that the layover camels look uncomfatable and unelegant. Also i think when skaters to cartwheels and simaliar moves on the ice, they are neat but dont fit in to figure skating, most skaters dont do them but a few do. Thanks for the question! it really helped, iam just about anding the salchow now :)

I have to put in my vote on that thing that Sasha Cohen is most unfortunately know for! That thing where she is skating forward and has her free leg up by her ear and her arm wrapped around her leg...

Honey, there are just parts of you I don't want that good a look at!!

And of course all our young girls now have to do the same thing!
