The Whitsundays are not the Great Barrier Reef although parts of them are close to it. The Whitsundays are continental islands not coral islands. They are still beautiful and worth visiting but you will need to organise a trip from the Whitsundays to the reef itself.
With a three-year-old, scuba diving and snorkelling are really out of the question so look for tours and excursions that incorporate glass bottomed boats or semi-submarines. You can all enjoy those.
Late November is well into the build-up to the wet season so expect some rain and thunderstorms while you are there. There is a small possibility of tropical cyclones as well.
