i think this is a good question and here is your answer God doesn't see one sin greater than the other, if you sin you sin regardless if you steal a guy's wallet or kill a man. Every sin is equal and everyone can be saved

I think it is lie. It is the minutest level of sin which can start at any age and in any or probably every home. If it is encouraged or made to look glamorous(as done in lot of our movies) it develops a casual attitude in a person towards sin. Our PROPHET(p.b.u.h) has said that "a true believer will do anything but lie". This is because the very base of faith in islam is recognising the truth about ONE GOD. Also, thanks to this HADEES we get an idea that lie is the germ of every sin.

The mother of all crimes is the 'dissatisfied mind' of an individual. The dissatisfaction could stem from so many things like,
-- Hunger,
-- Fear,
-- Jealousy, Envy
-- Poverty,
-- Depression,
-- Anger,
-- Hatred,
-- Greed,
-- Fundamentalism
-- Simply Psychotic behavior
One thing leads to another and then the crime happens.

The mother of all sins is the non realisation of ourselves as souls. That leads to the waste of this human body which we are born to, for achieving our cherished aim.
Greed, anger etc. are the outcome of our ignorance. We are naturally inflicted by them. And let me tell you that we are deliberately skirting the real issue. And we therefore know, why we are miserable?

I would say FEAR is # 1 to tell a lie for getting caught, getting punished or for getting embarassed.
A mother can never tell her daughter that she cheated on her father and slept with another man for fear of loosing love of her daughter.
