I was coming home from a friend's place at 1am after watching a late night college football game, and in a neighborhood near my house I got pulled over for running a stop sign. It was pretty late and I was tired but I'm almost certain that I made a complete stop at the stop sign. Should I go to court and fight this ticket? Nobody else was in the car with me and it was 1am so nobody else was on the road except for me.

Your question seems very honest. Since you are not sure that you came to a full stop (you said that yourself) you might as well plead guilty. Contrary to what the cop-bashers on this site say, the cops have better things to do than indiscriminately give our false tickets. It's not worth loosing your job over. He has to go to court and swear on a bible that he observed your car and it did not come to a complete stop. He is upholding the law as he is sworn to do.

Yes a friend of mine had this happen. He paid the ticket it was like 150 dollars. Then when he went to renew his drivers license he had to take the test over because running a stop sign gives you 6 points and thats enough by itself to make you retake the test.
If you go to court and lose due to the cops word against yours you may have to pay court costs too. Plus some places cops get penalized for not making it to the court cases so they try to line up so many people on the same day and be sure to make it. So theres a little chance you will win only if your record is clean and the cop doesnt make it.
I would say just pay it. Get it over with. Wear your seat belt, Drive the speed limit, Make sure you come to a complete stop at stop signs and count to 3 in your head. Until this all blows over and your record is clear because you don't want to add on to this.
Just advice. Hope it sheds some light.

Time, effort, energy of fighting it will cost you more than just paying it. Even if you go to court and fight it, it will be drawn out and be your word against the cops. The judge knows the cop... he doesn't know you... who do you think he'll believe?

Could even get an attorney to ensure you win... but then you clearly spent 100 times the price of the ticket.

Could just appear in court and tell the judge you know its a false ticket. But you care not to fight it, but would ask the judge to take your fee and apply it to the cities children charity or something. To show you are a good citizen.

"I'm almost certain that I made a complete stop at the stop sign."
The officer was certain that you did not, or you would not have received a ticket. If you take it to court and say that, you won't get very far.

Just pay the ticket, if you go to court it may cost you more to pay all them fees. The phrase "I'm also certain that I made a complete stop at the stop sign." won't be a good excuse for the judge. Now a days patrol units have cam recorders that records all their traffic stops maybe stronger evidence against a case.

whether you came to a "full" stop or not, the real question is whats it going to cost me, If you have a good driving record, it will cost a lot more to fight the ticket than pay it. If this is going to increase your insurance rates, then you may be better of to fight the ticket. Good Luck

Plead guilty with an explanation. Say you rolled and stopped further than the sign, but stopped to peer past the parked vehicles obstructing your view. No attorney needed.

Yes, Go to court, but tell them you are absolutely sure you came to a full stop. Don't tell them you are almost certain. Not good in court.
