The truth is............... the next thing to come is, download 1080P or better!! Well it is already hear for most of us!! So the war will never take off, just like Blu-Ray!!
However.... Sony had hoped, the attack to win the format war would work this time!! They started this plan back in the 80's; when they started buying studios. They learned in the Beta to VCR WARS.... the key is availability!! SO........... today Sony is pulling no punches and not letting any of their movie's come out in anything other than Blu-Ray!! While everyone else once again........... dose not want to help Sony get any bigger!!
FYI
There is multi format war on world wide, much better than 1080P! The newest and soon to be the biggest is a new download format being pushed in China.
So the real questions is who going to win.... in the download format war in China.
PS
Blu Ray will not win becuase Play Station III!! Becuase the sale on cot to make it................is not going well!!!
Xbox out sold III.....but WI out sold both of them put together.
Also the real cost in parts,,,,,,,, to upgrade a players to Blu-ray or HD DVD is about $10.00 US to the maker!! So with in few years, every $299 laptop will play both for no extra charge!!
I'm not sure others are getting the point!!
Blu ray is hot in sales of disk and players world wide!! Moreover, most of world 1080P TV's need it!! That is what most buy today....right!! YES!!
Now for those that want to till buy a DVD; they can for the next 5 to 20 years with out much of a problem!! But why would anyone pay more and waist time, for a worse format?
Last but not least!!
HD or Blu-ray are largest improvements in video since the color TV!! Asking anyone the knows.

Hi.Format wars don't sell players.HD DVD and Blu-ray are not quantum leaps in technology. With false starts for both HD DVD and Blu-ray as well as PS3,this issue is still a state of mind for many consumers.HD DVD and Blu-ray are not being positioned as replacements to DVD,they are simply an option. HD DVD and Blu-ray can exist side by side indefinitely ,until the format replaces standard DVD.

alot of people think that both formats are too costly to make mass volumes of...everyone is waiting for that new format that will be cheap and affordable.....but so far i think that blu ray is winnning because it made its mark on the ps3 and blockbuster carries blu ray, not hd-dvd
