My husband just started a new job last week and there is no waiting period for insurance. He has to fill out the forms online. My question is, how soon after he fills out the forms can I go to the doctor? I need a physical for my job and stuff like a TB test, vaccinations, etc. I only have a week to get the physical and stuff, but I'm worried our insurance won't kick in intime. How long after the application pappers are emailed is the insurance active? Will I have to wait for the insurance card to come in the mail? That takes forever, is it possible for the doctor's office to just call out insurance company and ask if we are covered?

It depends on how fast the insurance company processes the enrollment papers. Sometimes it's a week, sometimes it's a month.

As a patient, it's YOUR responsibility to know if your insurance is active and if you're covered or not. What you can do is have your husband check with his HR person about a week after the papers are filed to see if the plan's kicked in yet. If it has, you can get your insurance id# by calling the plan and providing your husband's SSN. Due to privacy, most doctors offices can not get that information for you. It would be wise to come in to the office with it.

It is usually the first of the month following your qualifying for coverage.
