What makes Victoria so beautiful, as people tend to say? I will be there during wintertime.
Is there a lot of short-term/temporary housing available? I'm a student and will be needing one semester's accommodations. I am hoping to sublet with some students. What are some safe areas of the city to live in? Is Victoria a safe city overall? Any areas of the city to avoid, any to see?
What are typical price ranges for living in Victoria? Is cost of living high, rent, entertainment, etc high?
Anything else that's good to know?
Thanks!!!

Victoria is beautiful because of the climate, tourism and as a government town. The three add up to lots of gardens and greenery.
As a University town there tends to be accommodations for that. But property values are shooting through the roof. It has always been a retirement place, and more and more Canadians are hitting retirement ages. The most well off retirees from across Canada can sell their houses in other high priced real estate markets and move to Victoria and willing to spend it all on real estate there. So you are left to compete with that.
Right downtown at night is the main place to avoid. Lots of kids hang around. You also have to pay attention to your personal safety issues when on ANY student campus. The large group of students tend to attract criminals for anything from car and bike theft, to sexual assaults.
I suggest you check out the Royal BC Museum and hang out at the Legislature building on a sunny day. It scenic day and night.

Victoria has two beauties - the first is the natural beauty of the setting. It's located on an island, bordered by the
Pacific Ocean. And it is constructed in the 'Olde English' style, so there is the charm of that influence. There are tea rooms and all that sort of thing, as well as modern stores.
Short term housing isn't great problem - you could sublet or you could get room and board with a family. As you are going to be a student, check with the school you will be attending to find out the best accommodation choices in the vicinity of the school, so you won't have to worry about transportation.
Google up the Victoria Times newspaper, and check their classified ads for housing prices. Is the cost of living high? That depends on where you are coming from. It's pretty average for Canada, but I don't know what you are comparing it to.
Victoria doesn't normally have super cold winters - cool, but not below freezing. They people who live there call it 'brisk' weather and can be seen running and jogging outdoors all year round. It's a lovely place, really, and I hope you enjoy your stay there.

Victoria is a provincial city in the strictest sense. It is a town built around government (being the provincial capital) and is not very cosmopolitan. What it offers is clean, safe streets, limited night life and expensive rents in a beautiful setting.
Winters are fairly warm but raw, lots of wind and rain. The landscape can be a bit grey during winter but the season is about the shortest possible in Canada; the first blooms appear in gardens in February.
The Island takes some getting used to. The ferries can be a bit spotty during storm season so access can be an issue and the pace of life can seem a bit relaxed (read: slow) for someone from a larger center.
Driving in Victoria can be an adventure- there are a lot of older drivers (Q-Tips) and one way streets and streets that meander all over the countryside. Navigational hazards.
Victoria highlights:
-Chinatown- great cheap veggies, old opium dens, Bean Around The World (coffee shop), Kaz (great sushi).
-Cook Street village- a nice place to live if you can find a place there that you can afford.
-Dallas Road- the waterfront is natural and beautiful, spend some time there walking the seawall.
Victoria is a very safe city, there are no areas that are particularly risky to visit.
Cost of living is high.

Victoria BC Canada is good as a 1-2 week vacation, and it can be lots of fun if you bring your own money to play with. Don't get that confused with living long term there, which is not as fun. Due to the local culture (economics, social, politics, etc) the city metropolitian region is very uptight, restricted, cliquey. Your merits don't matter if you don't have connections, same memberships in something as other people. People have said Victorians are lacking in passion and personality, quiet and dull like at a funeral, real zombies. Unless your bring your family fortune, and friends with you, you will most likely end up poor, friendless, and bored like the others before you. If you are looking for long term with lots of good jobs, big money, and lots of fun friends with money to do things, Victoria BC (Bring Cash) is not Calgary, Edmonton Alberta, Saskatoon Saskatchewn. British Columbia means Bring Cash. You should read the other people's comments on www.ratemyemployer.ca, www.topix.com (victoria bc canada section), www.yelp.com, www.thedirty.com, Yahoo Answers, etc. Not knowing any inside knowledge leaves you at a disadvantage.
