Yes, and no. No more than a pound or two a week, is the healthiest way to do it. You need protein, and fiber rich food as well. Drink lots of water. Not only is it good for you, it is good to you.

Exercise, is a must as well. At less an hour maybe a little less every other day. Combination of cardio, and weight lifting.

Fruit, due to its high carbohydrate content, may be counter productive to weight loss. I recommend, you follow the South Beach Diet, i.e., make it a permanent life style change. Exercise, of course, is essential to a healthy life.

Why don't you try adding some chicken & fish to that diet. I did that and have lost 16 pounds in 6 weeks. Also do some excercise.
