Because they are coded as freight, not animals. I shipped a dog to Missouri once and paid almost $300, which is the same cost as a human. It was a 5 1/2 hour trip. 12 hours later she got there, had messed her crate and was very upset. Why? Because they kept leaving her off the plane because she was "freight". I was furious. I had paid for a full-price ticket for her. It is very cruel. The crate was such a mess my son left it at the airport and took his dog home.

It is not necessarily unsafe to ship a puppy. I think the puppy should be at least 12 weeks old. There is a direct, counter to counter, ship for animals. The puppy receives special consideration and is not handled like all the rest of the "baggage". There is an extra fee for this service. I think the flight needs to be a direct one, even if the seller and/or buyer have to drive for a few hours to pick up the animal. In short, like most things, there is no good response without taking into account the individual circumstances.

The travel is stressful and scary, it can often traumatize a pup. also some airlines do not check animals frequently, store them like cargo, and lose them. There are reputable carriers that handle pet transport well, but often for a young dog to travel for hours on a plane in his crate, it is extremely stressful. It can cause numerous health issues as well, if an animal isnt handled poorly you also face the risks of it having a heart attack, hurting itself trying to dig its way out of a carrier, or being dehydrated. I would also not reccommend any breeder that ships, if a breeder offers to drive the dog to you, that would be different. The stress is simply not worth it for the dog.
