My optician told me I could overcome my far sightedness by not wearing my glasses.

This sounds like maddness as I cannot read a LCD screen or book or menu for more than 20 seconds without them on.

Is he mental or can I correct my eyes?

Alto depends on your age and how hypermetropic or long sighted you are. The crystalline lens inside the eye acts like the focusing mechanism of a camera. As you will know if you want to take a picture close up you alter its focus. Now when you look at something close the lens alters shape to overcome that fact that the light entering the eye is divergent. To put some figures on, at usual reading distance your eye compensates by approx.+ 3.00 dioptres. If your specs are say +5.00 the lens now has to compensate +8.00 which it cannot do. If you over about 45 presbyopia is also a factor. This means the lens in your eye doesn't work as well. I suggest you change your optician! By the way one of answers is wrong. The person is shortsighted NOT longsighted!

+2.50 is a large Rx to carry without glasses, especially for closework, though I've known young people (with their much greater powers of accommodation) avoid wearing glasses at least for distance to no ill effect at that sort of power.
It does increase the risk of the eyes turning in, though!

Someone with a detected Rx of +2.50 need not have all of that prescribed. A compromise Rx can be the most comfortable answer in some cases, as well as the glasses only being worn at particular times.
This needs individual assesssment of the binocular coordination as well as the focus, to give best advice.

If the optician's words are reported correctly, I'm not impressed. Particularly on the astigmatism.
Find a better one.

You can correct your eyes. I used to be near sighted -1.00 D and was able to completely improve my eyesight with eye exercises to the contrary of what eye doctors told me.

There are also eye exercises that work for far sighted people.

Best regards,
