Why not just quit smoking? I used to smoke more then a pack a day. Marlboro Red's mostly and sometimes Lucky Strike non filters. If I went out to a bar or club I would smoke almost another pack. After 10 year I was tired of the crappy feeling, especially in the morning. So one day I just quit. About two weeks later I had one more cigarette and I felt like crap. That was over 6 years ago. I have not had one since. I'm a carpenter and I work outside mostly so I would smoke all day long, on breaks, in the car to and from work. I'm still around people that smoke at work sometimes, but most of the friends I had while smoking like after work and at the bars and clubs I really don't see anymore. So that helped me a lot. You just have to do what's best for you. If you want to quit, you'll do it Then, if you want to increase your health and go back to running, you'll do it.

All you have to do is just do it. You'll feel better and live longer. Your significant other, family, friends will support you.

It's not so much the smoking that will prevent you from running a 6 minute mile (although that will have a lot to do with it, too) but the fact that you haven't ran in four years. A 6 minute mile is a decent pace, and requires you to be in shape. Even if you haven't gained any weight, you are probably severely out of shape muscularly and cardiovascularly (I don't think that's even a word, haha)

You would be surprised to see how many runners that smoke. I did the same as you, used to be ok at running, then started smoking and lost courage (and breath) every time I tried to start running again - just to hard. Finally I quit smoking some years ago and took up running last year, at the age of 45...

Well, we've all done stupid things because we're human. But we all have the power to turn things around if we want.

STOP SMOKING TODAY !!! Change your lifestyle NOW !!!

Start exercising again but don't worry about times until you've built up a base of about a month running. Take 1 day off a week.

Good Luck

no, not at all you'll probsbly be out of breath after the first lap. Thats what smoking does to you. But if you expect to finish it in 6 minutes i would start conditoning before and quit smoking...
