Absolutely. I have wonderfully nosey neighbors who keep an eye on all the doings in the neighborhood. If so much as a piece of trash blows across my yard, they report it!

No, but I have only lived in my apartment complex for three years, and I don't really know any of my neighbors, other than to say hello to.

My mother has lived in the same house for forty years, and even though some of her original neighbors have moved, she always introduces herself to the new ones. Two families around her have keys to her house, and one has the key to her mailbox. When she is going to be gone for a day, she informs her neighbors, and they keep an eye on her house. If she is going to away on "trash" day, she leaves her week's trash in her side yard, and one of her neighbors takes her trash to the curb to be removed.

As trusting as my mother is, she still insists I lock my car when it is parked in her driveway. Go figure!

Well, really it depends. Do you know your neighbors well enough?? Do you feel their trustworthy? Alot of people let their neighbors know, so someone will collect their mail, and paper, and watch your house. ( You don't have to leave a house key or anything) Honestly if you and your neighbors are close then I dont think their should be a problem.

You placed your question under etiquette. I DO tell my neighbors when I'm leaving for a few days, but it's NOT because I believe it's the "polite" thing to do. No, it only makes sense to have them "keep an eye on the place"; i.e., it's for purely selfish reasons, not out of a sense of obligation.

I think it depends on how much you trust your neighbors. If you trust them and are friends with them, then yes, tell them so they can keep an eye on your house, pick up your mail, etc. If you don't trust your neighbors, don't tell them. They might try to do something to your house or tell other people that you're gone, who might try to break in.

my neighbors are very close to me so yes, i do tell then when i will be gone. if you do not know your neighbors you can always call you local police dept or sheriffs dept and request a house check while you are gone. there is no fee for this and the officers willl drive by numerous times to check on your property. believe me ... i am a 911 dispatcher.

Only to one trusted neighbor I also leave my contact numbers with him.

We'd tell the neighbors who were our friends. They'd come over, pick up the mail, and feed the cat. Very nice of them, eh?

I tell the ones that I know well. The others I don't really care, so I don't bother telling them. I always let one other friend know that lives in town as well. This way if she is driving bye and sees something strange, she can give me a call.

Yes, the ones we trust. Then they can watch more closely than they normally would for suspicious things. It's comforting knowing that someone is keeping an eye on your house.
