I use an elmo portable overhead tranparency projector. Scan your image into your computer and print it out on an inkjet tranparency, stick it on elmo and away you go. Works well without having to turn all the light off like you do with some of the direct-projection ones (don't like them).
You can probably find a secondhand one on ebay.
Other possiblities are.. a computer with a data projector, or you could use a slide projector.
Elmo is best.

The general name is opaque projector. If you can deal with tacking up the object (as opposed to showing a book to a class) it is very easy to build one with a projector lens, a cardboard box and a bright light inside the box. eSearch on opaque projector and you will find sources.
Laying flat and projecting sideways is harder because of front surface mirrors, etc.

Remember the overhead projectors from school? They have been phased out in favor of powerpoint presentations, look at a used school supply warehouse.

Actually I saw something like this in a catalog once, where you can take any picture, and it will enlarge it on the wall, and you could draw it, paint it, etc..
I believe it was in the carol wright catalog
