First off, it is a good general rule of thumb to not bring a dog in to the family until the youngest child, and last child, is at least three, preferably four. This is because puppies are rambunctious, and just as much work as little kids, if not more.
And if you adopted an adult dog, you would want to make sure ALL the children know the rules regarding how the dog is to be handled and played with. Generally, babies and puppies do not mix too well, unless the dog is already in the home.

If you go a breeder that knows what they are doing, then go for the Cocker Spaniel. Such a merry, happy, charming dog, great with kids IF bred correctly from GOOD lines, and socialized/trained properly.

I never recommend Goldens as "family" dogs, only because they are actually working dogs, NOT lazy, quiet, dogs. They prefer a job to do, lots of exercise, and plenty of playtime.
So many Goldens become lethargic, lazy, fat, even aggressive dogs becasue their family simply no longer has the "time" for them.
Cockers too are high-energy dogs, but more easy-going and cuddly.
I suggest you seek out a very good breeder of Cocker Spaniels, or visit your local shelter for an even better, well-rounded family dog.

I grew up with spaniels as a kid ,and i currently own spaniels and they get along great with kids. however due to poor breeding since the 70's there have been many aggresive cockers. If you want a cocker spaniel be sure to find a reputable breeder or a rescue that ahs evaluated the dog. Cockers can be great family dogs if raised correctly.
Golden retrivers can also be great dogs, and may be better for a first time dog owner.Do some research on both breeds and breeders and then decide. You can also check out www.petfinder.com and adopt.

Golden Retrievers are very good with children. They are calm and very loving. Cocker Spaniels can be very territorial and I would NOT recommend them for children as young as 2. With ANY dog you need to supervise the contact between small children and the pet -- even the best well behaved and sweet natured dog can bite or nip in self-defense if a high-strung child does something to it that it doesn't like or wasn't expecting! NEVER LEAVE A YOUNG CHILD ALONE WITH A DOG!!!!!!

I have a golden retriever, and he is the friendliest dog I have ever had! He loves everyone he meets! They are one of the most intelligent breeds and great with kids. But they are big, so you have to be careful of them jumping and knocking down your little one. They are also very active and need a lot of exercise and room to run. I would ask a vet what they would recommend for a pet. Even though golden retrievers are very friendly, I wouldn't totally trust any dog around a small child, because if the child is playing and pulls their tail (and they will), it could startle the friendliest of pooches, and they will instinctively bite.

I have a male Cocker Spaniel. I would highly recommend them for a family with children. They are very fun loving dogs, great with children, eager to please, and very intelligent. I would suggest getting a puppy so it can be raised with your children. We got our Cocker when my son was 3 and the puppy was 10 weeks. The two of them bonded from the start. Our puppy used to cry at night to get in bed with my son,and once we lifted him up onto the bed,the two of them would snuggle up and go to sleep. We've never had a problem with the dog snapping or nipping at anyone. Before our Cocker,we had a German Shepherd. She died of old age. She bonded with me and just tolerated my hubby and kids. Very protective of me,but I didn't really trust her too much with the kids. Beautiful dog and I loved her,but our Cocker has been much more of a family dog. As far as getting along with other pets,we have a cat, have had kittens, have a PitBull Lab cross, and a hamster. Our Cocker loves to interact with all the other animals without any issues. You can't go wrong with a Cocker. Good Luck with your choice.

the golden is the best choice for kids. Please teach you children to respect the dog you get. No dog will be good to a child that will be disrespectful. Ear pulling and all that stuff. People often like to blame a dog for biting kids, most of the time the kids have it coming. Train the kids especially if they never had a dog before. under 2 years of age is a little too young

My suggestion is to take some online quizzes. Animal Planet has one. They will make breed suggestions based on the answers you provide -- size, energy level, intelligence, good with kids & other pets, etc. I know that golden retrievers are really great family dogs; labs are too. I have a small dog, havanese, and I love the breed. They are small (8013#) but sturdy; get along with other dogs, smart, don't shed, etc. but alot of breeders will not sell to families with young children. Other downside is that they are expensive ($1-2,000).

Check your local spca or rescue websites and petfinder.com for more info.

A golden or labrador retriever may be your best bet. Goldens especially are very smart, easygoing, and love everybody (usually). But when you pick a puppy, let it meet your kids before you commit to taking it. If the puppy seems comfortable being handled by children, it will probably fit in just fine.

Cockers are not as patient with children as retreivers tend to be...but retrievers are also very big dogs. I would expand your search to include other breeds. Take the breed selector quiz on animal planet's website. It will match you to a number of breeds based on certain criteria, and you can decide from there. Here's the link....

I myself have a one year old golden retriever. Part of the reason I chose this breed was because of its unique ability to recognize an infant as more fragile than an adult. My dog, Fenway, is a wonderful pet who is very easy to train and also a great watch dog. My two year old nephew often sleeps with his head on her stomach and learned to walk by holding onto her tail!

However, make sure you walk your dog regardless of the breed - they NEED excercise, discipline, and lots of Love!!!!
