besides regular cleaning of the bottle, you could also switch to purified or bottled water.

well, this may sount O.C. to you, but to keep my hamsters watter bottle clean and limescale free, i do this daily:
1) thourogly wash it in VERRY warm soapy water, rince well and completely
2) put 1/2 an inch of vinegar in it , close the cap, and shake it well. then i spray the outside of the bottle with vinegar.
3) the whole thing is then rinced thouroghly
4) i then wash it again in very warm soapy water and rincew thouroly and completely and then im done
i also use a special bottle brush and i only use bottled water for my hamster, fresh from the fridge in summer and room tempurature in winter

You may use bottled water in an iron without fear of limescale IF the bottled water is "distilled" or "deionized." Bottled spring water or mineral water will scale up your iron. To remove scale that is already present, a dilute solution of white (distilled) vinegar in distilled water should do the job.

Your hamster's water bottles should be cleaned and refilled with clean water every, single day. Wash the bottles with hot water and mild soap.

Besides regular cleaning, we replace our water bottles every few months. There are also special bottle brushes you can get to scrub out the water bottles.

Well, if you change the water every day then you should be fine, but if green starts appearing in the bottle then just throw the bottle away.

if you change the water every day with soap and hot water it shouldnt be getting dirty with a film
