Dietitians are not the best source of determining a diet for you. They are trained to work along with physicians that follow the medical profession's profiles. So called main stream medicine follows allopathic medicine approach. Additionally, they follow the Pasteur concept that if you kill the germs, you get rid of the disease. Doctors are precluded from prescribing nutritional supplements to cure diseases and can actually lose their license if they don't follow the guide lines of the AMA that only approves a drug approach to medicine.

Since dietitians use the same basic approach to medicine, they try to find specific isolated nutrients to create effects that treat symptoms in response to the medical industry approved protocol. This is why most of the nutritional advice given by dietitians do not work very well and have not been really effective in improving the well being of patients and why doctors do not feel nutrition is a valid way to make people healthy. In other words, they try to work with the existing diets of typical Americans and add or subtract foods that you find in local grocery stores to create a diet that is healthy as they can. I have seen dietitians recommend eating jello, drink pasteurized milk, low fat, high carb, low protein diets.

The new paradigm in nutrition is the certified nutritional therapist approach. What these people do is to analyze the body as to specific nutritional deficiencies for that specific person and then make recommendations as to diets that are specific to that person's deficiencies to bring the person to a healthful state using food complexes. They do not treat or cure diseases, but make recommendations for diets based on the individuals specific needs after a very careful examination.

The certified nutritional therapist does not follow the typical American diet of low fat, high carb, low protein diet. This diet is destructive and does not lead to a long healthy life. They follow diets that have been proven through the centuries to produce very healthy cultures around the world. They are not "hired guns" like many of the dietitians.

Don't bother going to doctors to get nutritional advice. You will not get advice that is worth anything. They admit, if they are honest, that they know nothing about nutrition.

There are a lot of forums and sites like "Ask the Dietitian". I find these pretty unreliable. I feel like I know a lot about nutrition and it's concepts, but I learn a few new things everyday I study health. Your best bet is to go into a dietitian's office, but you can probably find some pretty reliable information online. Dont believe everything, though. Most information I see even on these forums are untrue.

Personally, I ate the typical american diet all my life and it proposed negetive effects on me. I chose a 100% vegan diet. Now I have more strength, I feel better physically and emotionally, and I learn some really delicious vegan recipes to spice up my menu. That might be something to think about. If you have any question about anything, email me and we can chat about it.
