I believe there are rumours out there that everybody's family tree is on the internet somewhere. That is baloney!

You might find some of your family lines. Then you must verify it. The information is user submitted and most is not documented.
Even when you see the same information repeatedly by many different submitters that doesn't guarantee it is correct. A lot of people are copying without verifying. Use the information as clues as to where to get the documentation.

Your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com which has lots of records. They have all the U. S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 is not available to the public yet.

A Family HIstory Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church has tons of records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection.
Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view for a nominal fee.

They don't try to convert you and I have never had them to send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell.

Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org are two free sites but still be careful about taking as fact what you see in family trees.

To do your family history properly, you should get as much information from living family members as possible, particularly senior member. Tape them if they will let you. It might turn out they are confused on some things, but what might seem to be insignificant story telling might wind up be very important.

Cyndi'slist.com has a multitude of websites.

Try these:
Free sites: there are several to choose from. Start with:
http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

http://www.usgenweb.com/

http://www.census.gov/

http://www.rootsweb.com/

http://www.ukgenweb.com/

http://www.archives.gov/

http://www.familysearch.org/

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

http://www.cyndislist.com/

Assuming they emigrated from Europe, start with Ellis Island and the Battery Conservancy sites:
http://www.ellisisland.org
http://www.castlegarden.org

Check with all your relatives first; even if they can not help much with names and dates and places, they probably can tell you stories that you will not find any where else.

Check your library: they may have www.ancestry.com or www.heritagequest.com, free for use, as well as books and periodicals and someone who can help you get started.

Keep records of what information you found and where; sources are invaluable, especially if you need to back to verify anything.

Don't forget: no matter the source, there are mistakes in it, whether from the census, a published book by a well-known genealogist, or the web.

Happy hunging!
