How do you keep love and joy in your heart when the customers are so rude to you that you want to cry and scream? It's getting so bad that I've begun to think about abandoning work until after college! Someone tell me how you remain calm and sympathetic and nice when you hate the way you are being treated!

A quick mind helps, to think up a polite response. But the best thing is to put a smile on your face, and in your voice, and not get upset yourself. Most people do not mean to take it out on you. They may be angry, or upset at a situation where they feel they got cheated
It is very hard to yell at a calm, smiling, responsive/receptive person. Be that person.
Practice some polite responses at home. Think up some things your customers might be upset with, and think up a polite response, in advance.
And go over each episode of unhappy custostomer after it happens. Could you have done it different? better?
And accept the fact that some people will not ever be happy, no matter what you say and do. It's rare, but the truth. And it is not your problem that they are just unhappy, your problem is to keep your love and joy out where your customers can see it.
Take a breath before you talk. Say a word to yourself, like "calm", before you talk. Look attentive, make eye contact. Customers want you to be in control of the situation. And follow the store's policies to the letter. Customer's want that, too. So does your boss!
Good luck!

i always kill them with kindness. i work at a hotel, people ***** all the time, but just keep in the back of my mind that i have the control. no matter what the say or do, i am the one that controls the out come of the matter. if it gets to be bad, like if the start cussing at me, i will politely say "i would love to help you, but is going to really hard for me to understand you if you keep talking to me that way. if you cant be calm then i will not be able to help you." then if they will not calm down then i would tell that i will call security. you are a person too and everyone has a limit. just remember to listen to every detail of what the customer is complaining about, ask what they want done to fix it, if it is not reasonable, come up with a compromise. if they don't want that then nothing is going to satisfy them and the will take it up with upper management anyway. make sure you document the incident or let your manager know and just move on. good luck

Hide behind your position. You are given certain rights in your job position. The customer doesn't have the right to assault you, or even threaten you. Just keep going on. Hope that the next customer will be better.

It's true that the rude people think that they can get away with anything in today's world. They hide behind unwritten laws and company policy.

Today, a customer told me that she had just found out that her husband was cheating on her. Customers are people too. They all have their bad days. What you can do is help them feel better, or at least try.

Or try to tune them out. But that's just a defense mechanism I utilize. Occupy yourself with other things and keep doing your job.

Honestly, I think it takes a special type of person to enjoy a customer service job. I've worked in retail and the restaurant business for years, and some people, no matter how good you are at your job, are just mean, horrible, and will look down their noses at you. When you're in college, most the the jobs that are readily available involve some sort of customer service, so if you need to keep this job I recommend just doing your very best, greeting people with a smile, and focusing on the cheerful people you meet, not the jerks. I, for one, got sick of it and got out of customer service for good!

I no longer work a job where I have to deal with customers, but when I did, I had no problem speaking my mind to those who were rude to me! I just kept a civil tongue and never raised my voice! I calmly would tell them just how rude they were/are and if they wish me to continue to serve them they had better get a bit more polite!
On the other had I have also been treated rudely by those who were supposed to serve me and again I did (do) the same thing or I just take my business else where!

I keep sane because I know I'm right and they aren't. I work in child care so most of the customers I deal with are dissatisfied parents (usually when their kids have had a bad day). I've been yelled/ranted at many times and at first it bothered me but I know that I do my job right and some people are just negative or are having a bad day and I choose not to let that affect me personally anymore.

part of what you are being paid for as a customer service person is to have a thick skin, and help rude customers. ALL companies that deal with the public WILL have rude customers. Just keep smiling, and those rude dudes will not be able to figure out your secret of success.

I make catty remarks to them but I same them in a way that makes them mad without jeopardizing my job.
Need more info what do you do?
I used to get really upset when I was younger and people would get rude. Now it's hard for me to keep from laughing in their faces.
Customer Service makes you bitter. The more you work them the less you care about others problems.
Sometimes it's hard for me to sympathize with guest. Yeah their situation might be bad but they are not the only person with a problem.

Boy I remember those days. Just smile and think about nice things and kill them with kindness. I know some people are really rude, but there is a whole lot more people who are really nice. If they are repeat customers you will eventually notice that they actually change to being nice. So then you will know you have won with each one who changes. Good Luck!

Been there, done that, made me mean.

Customers are different in different situations. The general public in a large city is going to be very different from tourists in a small town, coming in to browse during a rainstorm.

If you feel abused, you probably are being abused. Find another job. The change could be quite dramatic for you.
