Birds don't generally get grey hair. They don't get false teeth, or liver spots, or have to use a walker.

How do you know some of the birds AREN'T old?

I see dead birds kind of often. Even in the absence of cats, there are other critters who would polish of a dead bird. Rats, even.

I don't think birds just disappear when they die. You just don't know where to look.

Ever drive out into the countryside and see road kill with magpies or other wildlife eating the remains? Same thing with with urban birds - it is part of the life cycle that every creature is food for another, so even if you don't see the dead creature, there will be a carrion-eater which will dispose of the remains to meet its needs.

small birds only live for a few years, you can't tell their age, when they die, they do it without much fuss, and very little smell of decay, and by the way, there is no such thing as a neighborhood without cats.
