I think either sex is fine. On thing to consider is whether you intend to spay/neuter your new dog. If you don't, keep in mind that boys tend to be harder to control (but hell, it's only a Maltese--how much trouble can he get into? Get a hampster pregnant? LOL). Females in heat will spot around the house; that can be a pain, even if you get those special little panties for them. Plus, males may try to come around your little princess during that special time (imagine a German Shepherd getting it on with her--I'd like to witness that little co-mingling!). Personally, I recommend getting your new dog fixed.

As far as names go...I like "human" names. For boys: Germaine, Fred, James, Constantine...just to name a few.
For girls, I like Lucy, Peekaboo (not a human name, but still cute for a toy size dog), Daisy, and GiGi.

Good luck.

I have both a male and female small dog. I don't think it matters as long as you have them spayed, which I highly recommend. My fear with a male dog is that he would "mark" or "spay" on things. My male was fixed at 4 1/2 mos and he still squats and never lifts his leg to mark.

For names, I love Mia, Bella or Sophie for a girl. For a male, Starbuck (Star) Boo or Little Baron (Bear) is cute! They are very cute dogs! Good Luck!
