Simply because the world has changed, and become more scary and dangerous. Things which were once private and hidden are now flaunted out in the open, with no concern given for children. I think it's the loss of the traditional nuclear family which has contributed a lot to it -- when I was a child in the late sixties, I could go off for the whole day on my bike - and know anyone in the neighbourhood would be there to help me if I fell, needed a drink of water, etc. - with no worries! The majority of the homes had a SAHM, so there were always 'other moms' around to help us kids out!

It was better in the 50s and 60s for those who were not 1st generational Americans and who were white. For the rest of the country it wasn't so hot. We had incest, child sexual assault and rape in the closet. Women did not have the rights they do today, and domestic abuse was state sanctioned. So who the f*** thinks that it was better then? Abuse of minors was unreported or swept under the rug, sure we didn't have the drug abuse of today - that's because it was LEGAL and folks were taking it left and right (including the president who was administered now illicit drugs by his doctors - both Kennedy and Nixon got high).
Oh yeah, and it was not acceptable for a woman to wear anything less then full formal attire to work - if she was able to get a job that paid her at most $0.50 for every dollar her male counterpart was paid. And, if you did become pregnant you were expected to quit before you showed. Smoking was everywhere - so everyone was a victim of second hand smoke. Nasty chemicals were being used to clean our homes, our clothes, and to make everyday objects.
We were in more danger from pedophiles, rapists, serial murders, germs, doctors, you freaking name it then as compared to now. Makes me want to go back!

Actually, with the height of the cold war, the world was more dangerous in the 50s and 60s than it is today. In those days, a large scale nuclear war was considered more to be inevitable than unthinkable, as it is today.

That would be nice but you just can't change life that has been lived. Can't change history either. We just have to find remedies for what is wrong and we'll never be able to go back to what was.

that would be great. but remember, the 1800's were all happy and everything, but when you look at blacks' & women's rights, stuff we just nowadays realize, yeah we're all equal, back then, they didn't have that.
so we have traded some things. i agree though. like when cars were first developed and the world wasn't so polluted and people were nicer...but we want to go fast and have conveniences...it could go on and on.

I don't necessarily think it was better then, there was just a lack of communication, so you only hear about how wonderful it was.
