it doesnt really matter how much attention i give my piggy (and i do give him a lot) i cant be with him every second of every day like a friend could. i cant talk to him or play with him like another piggy could. i wish i could but its not physically possible. i have the best life for my piggy that i can give him exept a friend that is why a buddy is needed

if you are familiar with c&c cages i currently have a 2x3 and will be converting it to a 2x4 or larger if i get a second guinea pig. i will be honoring a 3week quarentine period in which i will be watching closly for signs of illness in the new piggy and be verry careful to not let anything spred to my currunt guinea pig (in case the new one is sick). i will be introducing on nutral territory and rearanging, cleaning thougholy and expanding the cage while they are meeting i have thought this through several times and i think i know what i'm doing. i know that it will be a bigger responsablility to care for to pigs but i know that it will be worth it and i can do it.

Unfortunatly I dont have the support of my vet. She said that its not really nessasary to keep piggies in pairs. she said that she has seen small heards of about 2 or 3. Also the volenters at the shelter, who have the best intrest of the animals at mind but may not know all the facts, said that 2 males will fight (not true) and they can be kept happily by themselfs. that is the story that my parents have heard and i will do anything in my power to change that.

I think it is important that your parents understand the need for another guinea pig. Explain to them that in the wild guinea pigs live in herds, and are therefore, very social. As domesticated animals this does not change, and that it borders on being cruel to house a guinea pig by itself. Go on to say that you will be paying for vet bills, food, bedding etc and that you expect nothing from your parents. Offer money for gas to go to the shelter to pick up the new addition. Back up everything with the Cavy Spirit article on Social Life and this article http://www.guinealynx.com/companionship.html from Guinealynx (perhaps print both pages off). If possible, get your vet behind you, ask your vet to explain to your parents the importance of a companion. Gather up a list of sites which explain the importance of keeping cavies in pairs and present it to them. Ask them what problems they have with adopting another guinea pig, talk to them and solve those problems. Exceed with your school work, provide excellent care for anyother pets you have and help out around home.

Well, the only thing I can give you is this:
Another boy guinea pig is what you want, or a girl if she/he is fixed. And it is proven (Don't know how though :S) that two guinea pigs don't need that much extra food or make and more ''mess'' as one guinea pig, and guinea pigs are very social creature and are herd animals and I know this is true as I own eleven and they all get along and I have noticed a leader within them, and it's a girl! Or, you could go out and buy a 3-4week old baby boy (Time of seperation from mother) and just put it in the cage/hutch and say that the guinea pig gave birth! (Even though it's a boy you could say whoever sexed it sexed it wrong lol)

I hate when parents wont let u get a pet but u can take care of it, i want a hamster so freakin bad, tell them that you think you are responsible enough to get another one and it would benefit your other guinea pig, because he always acts so lonely, and if he had a buddy you could spend a fraction less time with them and use that time to clean your room or something, the responsible thing is the only thing that works with my parents and this reminded me about it so i hope it works for u n me.
Good Luck!!!!

Personally, until you can afford to pay for your new pet, you shouldn't get one. I totally understand that you can take care of it but do you have the resources to take care of it? if you convince your parents that you will use your allowance to pay for BOTH of them, they shouldn't have a problem with you getting another. Make sure you get the same sex...the last thing you would want is 5 guinea pigs, rather than 2.
EDIT: I've come back and read your new postings. I think you are most definately ready for a new piggy!!! I'll say this much, you will be doing more for your new pet than I ever did for the ones I had when I was 12. Congratulations on your new addition!

I would advice you to instead pay a lot of attention to youe guinea pig.
His cage is already his established territory and you will have to get a bigger cage to house two, and you can't put them together right away, you'd need to get another cage and slowly introduce them over a period of time.
Rememeber, pigs need a lot of space, and giving your pig extra attention will stop it from feeling lonely, or perhaps new toys and treats to keep him interested.
Since your pig may be older another pig could be a big proble, it may not get along with another male and will breed with a female.
Please take extra time to think this through, I have two piggies housed in seperate cages because one is older, but I didn't get them to be friends and stuck together in the same cage, one was abandoned but I couldn't bare to cram the poor thing in my other pigs cage and make her lose more space or feel unappreciated.
Please think this through more carefully !

well, companions are important for animals... however, they may be thinking this:
One: It means more cleaning, more food, and more bedding
Two: Sometimes when you put two animals together who didn't grow up together fight and one may end up being killed
Three: The price to pay if they ever get sick doubles.
I would say be careful in what you plot, but I understand why you would want another... but what would be better.... you taking care of one and giving it tons of attention? Or getting another and the one you love the most getting hurt or dying? Think about it hun.

let me put it this way... Male guinea pigs don't play nice unless they have known each other since they were like 2 weeks old. don't get a female because guinea pig reproduce faster than hamsters do.
