Not sure which it was, fleas don't always jump. Keep an eye out. If you keep seeing things on him.....try advantage. Both brands don't work on all dogs.

It's fleas. You can't mistake them for tick, they look and act nothing like each other. Tics are grey, bigger than fleas even when they're immature, and don't tend to move once they're on an animal. Also fleas don't always jump, they can also run.

You need to spray your house. Frontline is good, but most of a flea population lives in your house. As long as you're getting the Frontline on the SKIN of your animal, not the fur, then you're almost sorted - but if you haven't treated your house then you're going to continue to see fleas, because that's where they're living and breeding.

Get a decent spray from a vets. Don't even bother trying a stupid 'bomb' or powder, or any pet store products.

EDIT: If it's black, it probably wasn't a tick. Ticks look like this:

In an animal's fur: http://www.unbc.ca/nlui/wildlife_diseases_bc/ticks.jpg
Here's a black one, you can see the size of it though:

If it is oval, it should be a tick or mite and definitely not flea. Fleas have slender (compressed sideways) body and they jump like anything.

Its probably some kind of flea. There is a medicine I give my dogs. All you do is sprinkle this liquid on his back. It takes away all the fleas, and you only have to use it once.
