Yet people say they have a meaningful personal relationship with God... in what sense do they have a personal relationship?

It is a spiritual relationship. God is Spirit, and those who are spiritually alive can hear, see, taste feel and sense the Presence of His Holy Spirit.
The problem with man is that he is spiritually dead - cut off from the Life of God through sin. The relationship is restored through the atonement of Christ and the atonement is realized through faith. The result is one is born again - born of the Spirit, and from that moment on his spiritual faculties are made alive, and the possibility of communion with God is restored.
That is why Jesus said: "You MUST be born again." (John 3:7)
So "taste and see that the Lord is good!"
Psalm 34:8

Hmmm. Some might say. . .
"Just because you can't hear Him doesn't mean no one does." There really is a still, small voice when you sit long enough and quiet enough.
"You might not see someone, but you can be aware of what they have accomplished." I actually don't even require much faith to look around and know there is Someone behind everything that exists! Everything around me that I can touch tells me a very powerful and creative Creator really exists.
"What if God wasn't a force or some impersonal thing out there, but really was a Person?" One doesn't get to know a person by secondhand information. It's only by firsthand experience. This is faith. But, then that's what you can't see. I'm not worried about that, since there's a ton of other evidence to support that He just IS.
"Someone can touch your heart with a word or action, right?" When you're talking to convinced Christians, these questions will dead end every time. They are convinced, as they should be, but they aren't blindly so. They have experienced something real, and it's something anyone can experience, but not everyone chooses.
(I find it so intriguing that, in a world where people have sought to go so far beyond what they've got, that they wouldn't come to the conclusion that there just might BE something beyond what they've got.)

I have a different take on your question. How can I conduct a personal relationship with someone I can't see, hear, smell, touch or taste? Well, in reality you can't. :-) But the answer is a bit more complicated than you think.
I see Him in the eyes of every newborn I have ever seen, I hear Him in the laughter of children at play, I smell Him when I hold a puppy and have him licking my face while he breathes on my face, I touch Him everytime I hold a flower, a child, an animal, and I taste the glory of His creation each and every time I sit down for a meal.
Relationship----you bet---I SEE HIM in a sunrise, sunset---I HEAR HIM in a thunderstorm----I SMELL HIM after an afternoon shower when the air is washed clean----I TOUCH HIM when I see someone in need and reach out from my comfort zone to help that person---I TASTE HIM when I sit down to a meal with my spiritual brothers and sisters. I certainly hope you come to know HIM, FEEL HIM, SENSE HIM in the same way.
Just my opinion.

faith.
As for communication you have the intuition through the Holy Spirit, which is given upon conversion to Christianity, and the Word of God. And going the other way is prayer.
And by the way I can't see, hear, smell, touch or taste you. Yet this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I am not good at a personal relationship with God, although I feel I have a very strong connection with him/her. God is so complex, I can not have such a relationship. But, If one believes strong enough in something, all kinds of things are possible, God will set up the kind of connection your beliefs require, including a very science like type connection, for some people. To some people science is like God.

They feel comfortable and happy in their delusions, thinking that someone is watching over them 24/7. They take these pleasurable emotions as "the Holy Spirit" inside of them. What they're really feeling is their own desires to have a "loving creator" involved with their lives.
They also like the idea of getting a free handout every once in a while by "praying."

The Bible is quite clear that God dwells inside. You CAN have a relationship with someone who is closer than a friend.

How do you believe in such an illogical and unprovable theory such as evolution. When you can properly explain how you put your faith in evolution and make me understand it then I will explain how we have a personal relationship with God.
