In about 10 years when Russia rebuilds and China builds their modern, wealthy, industrialised militaries.

Good question. The Air Force Magazine about a year ago had a big article about that. Their conclusion is that with the fall of the USSR, it would be unlikely to see that kind of air battle much in the future and it would be highly unlikely that one pilot would see enough air combat to be called an ace.

The biggest issue was the fact that starting with Randy Cunningham, (first ace of Vietnam and the first missile ace ever) planes often take out the other at great distances with an air to air missile and he who sees the other guy first and fires first wins. No dog fighting needed. The F22 can take out an enemy plane 100 miles away. The other guy will never know what hit him.

could be in a war with China. North Korea and Iran just don't have the technology or the skill to compete with American BVR capability. my point is, we'd kill their planes from over the horizon before they even saw us on radar! unless Putin restarts the Cold War, we wont be dogfighting with Ruskies.

and guns ARE NOT OBSOLETE! ever heard of Top Gun? ACM? we dont use machine guns anymore, we use cannon, like 20mm and 30mm heavy rounds. the M61A1 cannon, standard on the F-15, F-16, and F/A-18, (and the F-14, before it was phased out of service, stupid sewer hornet)(all modern fighters), shoots 1000 rounds a minute. the GAU-8A Avenger cannon on the A-10 fires depleted uranium shells at the speed of sound; those sheels can kill any tank in the world! but i do agree that a knifefight, furball, dogfight, whatever will be kinda rare unless we mix it up with somebody big.

The next time the US goes up against a modern, renowned air force opponent. Let's face it, the USAF and other services with fighters aren't designed to bully the outdated air forces of small countries - they're running on the assumption there'll be a major war within the next ten-fifteen years.

Guns aren't obsolete, US fighter pilots are still trained to fight with guns long before they go through the motions of pressing the buttons to launch guided missiles. Missiles can be dodged, defeated with counter measures or rendered useless in close range - but the gun will remain for ages to come.

With the awesome technological advances in aviation weaponry, the only way a US fighter would get in a dogfight is if all other weapons systems on the plane failed except the machine guns. I am not even sure they still equip the latest fighters with guns, they have become obsolete in modern air war.

"have been the kamikaze's the superb fighter pilots that ever lived?" With all due comprehend, and have faith the fact I stay in awe of anybody with guts sufficient to place their life on the line for their ideals regardless of the undeniable fact that "best fighter pilot" has a mandatory standards. Survivability. definite many kamikazi pilots in case you desire to look at purely stats had a a hundred% kill ratio. real that should qualify as 'superb' in that regard unarguably. yet, no longer all kamikazi pilots hit their mark with the bravery and education and petrol and production of that airplane attaining 0 effect. additionally remember by way of fact the kamikazi are a strictly offensive weapon, the popular purpose being a bomber - it relatively is the US pilots discovering the artwork of their commerce as antagonistic to a pilot on a one way challenge. Which makes the greater appropriate Air stress? A fighter pilot has to maintain sufficent objective to effectively strategies you, shoot a distant objective it relatively is pulling each and every manouver the different pilots is familiar with - at the same time as a kamikazi pilot's objective is plenty slower shifting and equates to hitting the wide edge of a barn. brave and selfless definately and unaguably... superb superb 'fighter pilot' they do arise lacking.

When we fight China and our pilots are outnumbered and run out of missiles. They'll enter the furball (pilot's slang for dogfights) and use their guns. Our fighter pilots are the best because of their training.

If the USA decides to go to war with a country such as Iran or Russia or China thats the only time a US pilot will ever get into a dog fight.

It probably will not happen like you are thinking. If you mean a fight yes, but it's not like a US fighter plane is going to get in close combat situation with another plane.

We are talking long distances, like miles that a us plane would engage with an enemy. This isn't machine guns like in WWII.

Maybe there will be robotic or remotely controlled unmanned fighter jets.
This is not Science Fiction, there are already well advanced drones.
