My husband and I went though this almost 3 years ago. He was adopting my biological daughter. We went though a lawyer. Even though my daughter's biological father was not listed on the birth certificate, we were required to give him notice ( a chance to appeal it in 30 days). After waiting 30 days and no response, our lawyer took us before a judge and the paperwork was complete and official. It cost us a little over $500 - which I hear is normal. Good Luck to you in your endeavors.

My husband adopted my son from a previous relationship and it was painless, although I've heard it can be hard. We got a lawyer who did all the work, like getting in touch with the biological father and having him sign documents saying he wanted to give up all parental rights. That did take some time, but after the paperwork was signed on his part, my husband, my son and I went to court and the judge granted the adoption, put in paperwork for a new birth certificate and everything. Now I have heard stories of some fathers not wanting to give up their rights even though they still don't want anything to do w/ the child, that's someone else's story, but in that case, it can be a pain in the a** too.

If your in the UK you can go straight to the local social services and let them know what you want to do and they contact a social worker in the adoption team to get in contact with you and they make an app to see you and its goes from there, my husband just adopted my son it took a year but its all done, good luck xx
