I was able to get my sister hired at my office. work part time there (no benefits) and she was hired to work full time (with benefits).She took the job thinking her insurance would kick in automatically. When she got her paycheck, the insurance wasn't taken out. She was told that all employees have to wait 90 days for insurance. Now she has to find some type of insurance in the interim. I feel bad because she has some health issues. Is this policy common in the workplace?

It is very common for there to be a waiting period.

When I changed jobs - I got a very basic policy that covered the 90 days from Blue Cross Blue Shield for a couple of hundred dollars. It had a high deductible and was 80/20 but it would help in the case of a hospitalization or bad injury.

She should be able to keep the insurance from her old company until the new insurance becomes active. She will probably need to pay the premiums. She may also check into COBRA. She should ask the person who handles the insurance at her company about it. A waiting period is pretty common with most companies.

Many employers wait one to six months before the employees are eligible for coverage. This is to make sure they're going to remain an employee for a while.

Yes, this is very common. Sometimes the waits are as long as six months. This issue should have come up during the course of her interviews.

Its not at all unusual for there to be a waiting period before a new employee is eligible for benefits.
