No, it's the same. We just have more media coverage now to tell us what's going on..but lil billy was still being abused in his home, and susan was raped by her uncle, and tim was kidnapped and tortured-people just didn't get to hear about it..and the laws were not as strict.
Elderly people may say that they could run around free and safe, but that doesn't negate the fact that things were happening behind closed doors. The only difference is we KNOW better now, and DON'T let our kids risk it.
It was in no way safer, if you use logic, you can assume behaviour on human beings hasn't changed today-kidnappings, rape, abuse, poverty, all occured. The dangers differed though.
One time the strangers could use candy or puppie sto lure a child in a car-now they can use video games and the internet.

No I do not think the world is a "better (safer) place for our children now." Far from it. When my parents were children not only was it a safer place, but children were taught morals, respect and duty to God, family and Country. Not that bad things didn't happen back then, it just happens soooo much more now. There are horrible things going on in the world today that my parents' generation never ever thought was possible.
I personally think the break down of the family is the root cause to most of the problems in United States - not so much for the rest of the world. People are much more selfish today and there is no place for selfishness in the family, but unfortunately it is selfishness that has caused the American families to breakdown. Children who are raised in a selfish family become selfish adults - it's a snow ball effect. It just gets worse and worse.

I think the world is different now than it was then. I think people probably felt a lot safer before television. When we watch the news or crime investigation shows it makes danger seem like it is all around us. On the other hand, technology has made things safer in a lot of ways. We have much better seat belt laws and bike helmet laws than we did before. We are aware of more dangers like asbestos and lead paint. Fingerprint technology and DNA has helped put away criminals that would otherwise be out there on the street. More jobs involving children (teachers, etc.) require back ground checks now than the did before (even though there are ways to get around this). You can even look up on the Internet whether or not pedophiles live in your neighborhood. I don't know if it is safer now or then, but it is different.

Well I suppose this is all a matter on your perspective on life.It is wonderful to be alive today and to be thankful for all the good things.Medical advances have benefited so many.Organ transplants, neonatal care, research for cures for terminal illnesses, laser surgeries, etc.Technology that has made life easier, communication quicker, and laws that have made the workplace safer. Most people in the Western world have access to public education. There is opportunity for success, even with roadblocks in your way.Life is not perfect today and it wasn't in the past. The evils of today were also in the past.Topics such as predators, child and spousal abuse were never talked about.Crime, drugs and hate were also a part of the past.Life was not like a Norman Rockwell painting it was all part of an imaginary world. We cannot protect our children from the world but as parents we can prepare our children for life.We can teach them values such as honesty, respect, responsibility and accountability. We can teach them about making choices in life.Changing the world starts with each one of us,one person at a time.I would not want to return to a time where I would be expected to bury my head in the sand and ignore issues rather than address them. The good old days were seldom as rosy as we remember.

I am in my 50's, and when I was a child, we were allowed so much more freedom, as the world was a much safer place to live. Nowadays, we are frightened to let our children out to play, as they are at risk of being shot, stabbed, abducted by child molesters, raped, beaten up, mowed down by a drunkard, sold drugs. the list is endless, so yes, the world was a much safer place to grow up in when I was a kid.

it was better when we were children. We could go outside and play all day with our friends and not worry about any weirdos or pervs to snatch us up.
We made our own fun. We didn't have computers, Nintendo, Playstation, X-Box.
We hung out with our frends and played football, went to the movies on Saturday afternoons. We knew if we did wrong we were going to get the belt. Our parents weren't afraid to discipline unlike today.
It's gotten too out of hand. I say bring back the belt and you won't have the problems you have now.
We never thought about bringing guns to school.

When our parents were children the world was a safer place than now but it was still unsafe and they should have been cautious.

It is no more dangerous now than it was then, the only difference is now we know about every thing that happens in the world as soon as it happens. Everyone views the past through a rosy lens and forgets all the things they didn't like about the "good old days".
