Hi,

I'm an ex-certified dental assistant. Now I am an architectural designer.

The teeth in question are called cuspids and I see that they are a little prominent, but there are also some other teeth out of alignment that I can see on the lower right jaw.

There are several options that you can pursue, varying in intensity and price. The first thing you might try is to ask your dentist to soften the sharpness of the points. This can be simply and easily done with a diamond burr, during an office visit and should cost no more than a regular consultation appointment. You might not even need an anesthetic.

This is the quickest and least expensive route. Although the results will improve your appearance, it might not be to the degree you want to achieve.

You can have caps (porcelain crowns) done which will take a couple of office visits and a couple of thousand dollars which is probably not covered by your insurance because it is for aesthetic reasons and not to treat disease of the tooth.

Crowns remove a lot of tooth structure, and if it were me, I would choose to have the third option which is orthodontics.

An orthodontist can reposition all of your teeth, including the others I saw out of alignment. By re-aligning the rotation of the cuspids and their relationship to the other teeth, they will not appear so prominent. He can also soften the shape of the tooth after it is repositioned if need be.

This too, could cost several thousand dollars but is covered by most dental insurance plans because the treatment is to correct poor articulation of the upper and lower teeth.

Although orthodontics take a few years, in the end you will have achieved the best result that will last the rest of your life and improve the health of your teeth. The work will be paid for in part by insurance and you will have preserved the most tooth structure.

Today there are more options for tooth realignment other than metal braces. There are clear plastic braces and also products such as "invisalign" which reposition gradually through the use of clear plastic molds of your teeth in a progressive set.

I certainly would check into these options and discuss the course of treatment with your parents and dentist.

In Japan you've got what's known as "cute teeth". So smile big! You've nothing to be self-conscious about. I'm no dentist but I've seen a number of people with really bad teeth who'd probably kill for teeth like yours. Your picture looks good and would probably look great if you were really smiling.

They can be filed down to a certain extent. I had one long tooth on the bottom and had this done. If that isn't an option, they can maybe add a bonding material to the surrounding teeth to elongate them to make the 'fangs' less noticeable.

they can be reduced in length, not as short as your front teeth tough, that would look unnatural. The cuspids are naturally longer than the rest of the teeth, so find a good dentist who will shorten yours just a bit. That will not damage them.
