J. K. Rowling has outed Dumbledore. I have refused to let a children's book affect my faith, I have enjoyed the Harry Potter books and movies greatly...going against the ideologies of many Christians regarding witchcraft...magic...etc; I viewed it as simple entertainment, and still do. However, now that Dumbledore is gay, it somehow bothers me and lessons my respect for a British single mother who worked her way from being a waitress to a multi-millionaire, best selling author. How does this make you feel...if you have any feeling at all in regards to this matter?

OK, my bad for not including sources: Yahoo News RE: "JK Rowling outs Hogwarts Character." She spoke about Dumbledore at Carnegie Hall.

Roxie: The fictional character is gay.

Jolly Roger and Mike 1942 - see the above listing for the information.

To the self righteous who want to judge me for reading a work of fiction about magic - BITE ME, Pharisees!

To the ones that say I am a right-wing homophobe...I am not a homophobe, I have several gay friends...it just bothers me that Dumbledore is gay. Though I am right-wing...thanx.

T-Bird...omg!!! Tom and Huck were gay??? This answers alot of questions about the afternoon raft rides with Jim!!!

Relax people...it is just a question...no one is knocking down the doors to confinscate my computer yet... just wanted the input of you nice people... to be honest, it didn't really bother me that much...geesshh :) :( :) :(

OK, I am sorry I told my Christian brothers and sisters to bite me and for calling them Pharisees; to those I offended, please forgive me. I try not to cast stones, I enjoy life...as I feel God wants us too. In addition to reading Harry Potter, I also watch gory Zombie movies... I do not believe that it affects my faith what-so-ever, I still belive 100% in Jesus Christ...I follow His commandments, to love God with my all, and to love my neighbor as I love myself. Peace.

I feel EXACTLY the same way. I have read all 7 books. I own all the movies that have been released. But I just kept wondering 'why." I am so sick of people having to be politically correct all the time. Now that she is done writing HP, I guess she feels safe saying this. She knew if she did this during book 1, there never would have been a book 2.

Bad move JK.

in the Harry Potter books in the first place because the writing is clunky and confusing. I don't care if a fictional character is gay. One of my friends loves the books and she said there are no clues in the books that the character is gay, Rowling seems to have suddenly just came out and said the character is gay. I don't know what point she is trying to make. I thought she was done with the Harry Potter books. Obviously not.

When I read the article earlier today, it almost sounded like the idea for Dumbledore being gay came from fan fiction. I wouldn't doubt it. Nothing to freak out about - even if JK Rowling did happen to make a little jab at Christians at the end of the article. Maybe she just wanted to give one extra push for book sales, and this was a good way to get additional publicity?

It was unnecessary. Whether she was joking or honest I guess we'll probably never know. But what I do know is, since she never alluded to it in the books, she probably never really believed it. It was probably just to see the crowds reaction. I don't have a problem with gay people. I have a problem with someone, especially the author, telling me he was gay. Therefore I choose to ignore this idiocy and believe that he'd never had the chance to fall in love because he was so wrapped up in his work. Honestly, I'd always thought that there was something between him and Minerva McGonagall. Though, since they were teachers and we saw most things from Harry's perspective we could only speculate. That's the way I choose to remember him. This whole thing was just a publicity stunt.

Why does this matter??? Anyways it makes sense. You see it deeply bothers me that something such as a made up characters sexuality lessens your respect for JK Rowling. Dumbledore is not real and even if Dumbledore was real why should the way someone is lesson your view of them. The thing that I don't understand is in Canada and the USA and many other countries today we have right to our opinions yet being gay or lesbian is wrong. If that is the way people feel so what. As I said before Dumbledore is a character that JK Rowling has done an amazing job developing and something as small as his sexuality should not change peoples views of the book, Dumbledore or JK Rowling.

Would you have known or cared unless she mentioned it in an interview? I mean - Dumbledore was a loved character by a lot of people. I don't see this becoming a big deal unless people make it into that way. The common 12 year old isn't hmm'ing over Dumbledore's sexual orientation. In your mind you can allow Dumbledore to be asexual or in love with Professor Mcgonagall (as a lot of people suspected). She could change her mind tomorrow and make him straight. It's the 7 books that matter - and in those books she barely hinted at Dumbledore's sexual orientation. It seems strange why your respect has lessoned just because she made a key character attracted to the same-sex. it doesn't change the story. It doesn't change J.K.R.'s story of going from pretty much rags to riches.

ons; better they should learn about it early, than to experience the total culture shock when they're out on thier own.

This way, parents can intelligently discuss the subject with thier children and teach them the 'proper' attitude, depending on what the parent thinks 'proper' is, within the context of thier own sensibilities. Then the children can make up thier own minds when their time comes to form thier own relationships.

I think most kids get into trouble sexually when they are not informed of the real world choices and the parent's feelings about those choices. An ignorant child will grow up into an ignorant adult. And, I think we have enough of those frustrated creatures running around already.

Who cares if the character is gay. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

All these christian groups are up in arms but whether they want to admit it or not, i'll bet that a portion of these groups have gay members still hiding in the closet so they aren't judged as well.

It's high time people got with the program and accepted that there are gay members of the community, and they think, act, and speak the same way as heterosexuals!

All the hype has just given J K Rowling a massive jump in sales and just made her a few more millions - pretty smart really!

It is just a book of fiction. Where do you get your information? I have seen this pop up in other questions. Did J.K. Rowling say something about this character? You are aware it is fiction aren't you?

Edit:
Why apologize? No one has the right to judge you for what you enjoy reading. Harry Potter is harmless entertainment and so are gory movies. Now if it was real gore and torture that would be different.

A rude comment deserve a rude answer in rebuke. There are many nice ways to get a personal view out without bashing as they did to you.

Why would it matter? If you liked harry potter and thought they were interesting books then they still are whether one of the characters turned out to be gay or not. There is nothing wrong with being gay. It's normal.
