Because there are very few people that can really understand them or who they can relate to and vice versa. If you were to study up on the plight of the geniuses, you would certainly learn they have a handicap. Imagine having to go through school with all the teachers and students with IQ's lower than yours and an inability to help you learn what your mind craved to learn? There are a lot of misconceptions about the highly intelligent people on Earth... most people think they are just know it alls, but they are not, they have to learn, they have to learn how to think, problem solve and get along with others just like everyone else. They have strong points and may shine out in one or two or even three subjects and fail miserably at others. There are few teachers trained to really help these people. That's why they are depressed... not to mention the other normal stresses of life.

Social ostracism tends to help that process. It's hard as hell to be a smart kid in an ordinary high school if your brain outpaces your social growth.
Or it could be simply a matter of perception; intelligent and happy people blend seamlessly into society with little comment, intelligent and depressed people thrash about and are obviously both very smart and very depressed to all observers.
Or maybe life is depressing, and smart people know the most things to be depressed about. Ah, it's probably just due to all the lockerstuffing we got in sixth grade.

I don't know personally if that is true, but I have to say that as an artist that my best work comes from emotional turmoil. Why? I am not %100 sure but I think it has a lot to do with all the personal reflection that is involved with being upset.
People also seem to relate to the darker side of my art more as well. We as people all feel hurt sometimes and it is nice to be reminded that we are not alone I suppose.

Because they have so much more knowlege and depth than everyone else and no one to share it with. Wouldn't you be lonely if you had great wisdom and no one around you had the ability to understand? Loneliness can lead to depression.

Because they spend their whole time searching for knowledge of this world and overlooking their spiritual side...the knowledge of a world they don't believe even exist. The spiritual realm of angels and demons and God almighty. They feel empty and they don't know why.

people who want to be smart are desperately afraid they are not and have their self-worth all tied up with intellectual prowess. This vanity makes them easy targets and we know pride always goes before a fall.

because religions of the world seek to destroy what makes a human smart... and they mean to do it if it kills us.. so instead of death we are caught battling which causes depression... until the answers come... there is no god only religions built to give certain (a minority of people) power through them... and these few HUMANS are what keeps the religion mills working.. and apparently they don't mind if other humans view them as god....

Because they are smart enough to know something is "missing" in their understanding that is of utmost importance but too smart to believe anything unless it can be proven objectively (the Hebrew stumbling block) or can be justified philisophically by man's wisdom (the Greek mindset).
God declares that His wisdom is neither. According to the Scripture, you cannot understand God objectively or subjectively.
