this is an older plane with a bubble canopy a slender boom to the twin tail it looks much like a P 38 Lightning only smaller it has tri-cycle landing gear

Most likely you have had the great good fortune to have seen an Ercoupe.

For much more information, do an internet search on "ercoupe."

If that is not what you saw, then I, at least, cannot help you.

There's two that sort of fit your description. One is a Cessna 337. It's a twin engine though, one in front, one in back. The other uses a ducted fan instead of an open propeller, but I can't remember what it's called, or who makes it.
