I had a corneal ulcer in my eye last year-- and occasionally my eyes are still red. I put the drops in. They taste nasty! After I put my drops in, within a few mins I can taste them in the back of my throat. (Almost like a postnasal drip) only from my eyes.

*Can this really be happening? Are your eyes connected to your mouth just like your nose is? My friends don't believe me that I can taste them because they claim that the eyes are not connected to the mouth.

Yes. At the inside corner to each lid (upper and lower) there is a tiny hole called a lacrimal duct. If you look closely in the mirror and pull down your lower lid you will be able to see the bottom tear duct at the inside corner of the edge of the lower lid. The purpose of this hole is to drain tears from the eye. These tears drain through the lacrimal ductwork into the back of the nose at the top of the throat. From there they are swallowed down the throat. Many prescription eye drops have a bitter taste and guess where the bitter taste buds are on the tongue. That's right. At the back of the tongue right where the drops are entering the throat.

If you've ever wondered why when people cry their nose runs now you know why. The excessive tears produced from crying flow down the lacrimal canals into the nose. Hope this helped.
