Someone mentioned egg whites; this would be a mistake. Egg whites are quite drying and are often used as a clarifying mask for the skin. The YOLK, however, is rich in fats and vitamins A and E, and would be an excellent hair "mask".
The reason real mayonnaise works as a conditioner is because the two primary ingredients are egg and oil. However, shelf-stable varieties do not work as well as the old fashioned kind.
To darken the damaged hair slowly and to repair the damaged hair, brew a bit of strong black tea (say, 1/4 cup or less) and put it in the blender with an equal amount of pure olive oil and an egg yolk or two. Be sure the tea is cooled, or you'll have scrambled eggs in your hair :P Blend this together until quite creamy and use in place of conditioner.
If your hair is truly irreparably damaged, stop shampooing it. In fact, don't even wet your hair every day. If you have an aversion to a greasy scalp, you may use the tiniest bit of mild shampoo near the roots, but don't lather it throughout the rest of the hair. You want to baby your hair in this tender stage; the poor strands are in shock.
When brushing your hair, do not brush it while wet or even damp; wait until it is completely dry, as your hair is most elastic while wet, and brushing will stretch the brittle strands, which will then snap and break as they dry out. Purchase a natural boar bristle brush, and use this instead of anything with plastic or acrylic bristles. The boar bristle brushes are gentle on the hair, but they are also very stimulating to the scalp. Regular brushing distributes those necessary oils and also encourages growth because of increased circulation.
Adding a bit of rosemary to the tea before adding it to the mixture is supposed to help stimulate growth, as well. I have also applied olive oil liberally to the scalp and brushed it through and slept in it overnight. This not only soothes the stressed hair, but also lifts dead skin from the scalp without swelling or overdrying like water evaporation. Wash it out in the morning if it feels yucky. I have had success washing this out with a commercial conditioner, using no shampoo at all.
Above all, patience. These steps will help halt damage and teach your hair to repair itself, but as with most things that work doing, this process takes time. A single mask will improve your hair texture, but babying the hair over a stretch of a month or more will drastically improve your hair health.

What I do once a week and really love is use Jojoba oil. It can be used for skin, hair and scalp. It is wonderful stuff. I buy Desert Essense at my local co-op/health store. ( other brands are good too) Jojoba oil is really great and I take about a teaspoon in my hand ( it varies depending on the length of your hair) and rub it all over my hair/scalp.. I leave it in overnight. ( works best) It's not like olive oil which can be very heavy and harder to remove. This washes out nicely with shampoo. It is great for skin, and even sensitive skin, which I have. On your hair,it helps with shine after you use it for awhile.
When you rub it in, it starts to soak into the hair right away. I do it once a week , usually on a weekend. You also may have to keep trimming your hair to remove the dead, brittle hair.
It is nice for the skin too and doesn't leave an oily residue. You just need a little.

Olive oil with heat (once a wk-leave on for 20 min). Sometimes leave a little conditioner in after your shower. Also, Citre-Shine (frizz remedy) works great if you rub a little in your hair after washing it. I have long colored hair and the hairdressers can't believe what great condition it is in because I do that. Also cut down on blow drying if possible as it really damages your hair.

Okay, this will sound really strange, but it works. Mayonnaise. The real mayonnaise, with the eggs and oil in it. Wash your hair, put the mayonnaise on your hair while it is wet and comb it through, then wash it out. You will find your hair never looked or felt better. I used to do this years ago and had very long hair and lived on the coast (lots of drying wind, sea, and sand).

mayoniase is a good conditioner - wash your hair - rinse - when it is dam put mayo all over it - wrap your hair with plastic then a towel - leave it like for a few hours - your hair will soak that up.
your hair may be greasy after that - don't over wise - just adjust your style - if you do that a few times a week your hair will be nourished.
you will still have to do it no less then once a week for some time.

Take one cup of mayonnaise and add an egg. Apply to your hair and put on one of those shower caps for an hour. Then shampoo, condition and style as usual. You will be amazed how soft and repaired your hair will be. Try it.
