Pretty much the same risks that other soldiers take. If you have doubts, you could enroll in ROTC without the scholarship, see what you think and if you wish to continue, then pursue the scholarship. They do offer 2 and 3 year scholarships.

Their scholarships are a good deal if you plan to enter the service anyway. Why not go visit the Dept of Military science at the schools you are applying to and talk to some of the cadets as well as the staff.

Good Luck

Also depends on what branch you reciev your commission in. Obviously an infantry 2ndLt faces more risks than a finance officer. But agreed talk to the MilSci dept officers as well as cadets, the first 2 years are freebies unless you take a scholarship and see if its for you. Good luck from 1 Army ROTC grad.

2LT's have the same risks as any other soldier in the military, you need to be more specific, I am in an infantry unit now, and when we were in Iraq, we had a brand new butter bar get to our unit, a great guy and a great leader,2 weeks later, a sniper took him out. does that answer your question?

dont worry about the risks, because you will be put in high risk situations in the army, so if it gives you the heebie jeebies now, quit now.

As a 2nd LT, never, ever say "Based on my experience....", because you have none.

Other then that, seek the advice and listen to your senior enlisted. We used to have a saying in the Marine Corps. For every failed officer, there was a SNCO (Staff Non Commissioned Officer) behind him who did not take care of him.

Don't let the butter bar get to your head.

In the infantry you are the group leader, but the rotation of officers on the front line being such (shorter term then NCOs), the 2nd Lt had better be able to listen to his Sargent, otherwise he is asking for trouble.

you will be called a butter bar and alot of them wont give you as much respect as you may deserve. mainly due to because you havnt served before yet out rank them, make more money, and get better acomidations. so be respectful, ask for help etc. you face as much if not more danger becuase you control them. they will be looking to you for guidance if it gets think. so while watching your *** and they guys next to you, you have to think about how to get all your boys home safe. you can do it. millions have.

sgts will show you everything. your sgt will teach you all he knows and it wont take long, if you are a good guy, before they will look to not your rank, but you for leadership and guidance. its not as badd as people make it seem, it depends where you are statined and with what group.

In the history of war 2LT have the highest percentage of casulaties per rank. Meaning a higher percentage of all 2LTs get killed than percentage of all SGT. The higher up in the officer ranks you go, the lower than percentage gets.
