The languages spoken in Africa are as diverse as its people.

There are 11 official languages. They are known as Afrikaans, English, Isindebele, Isixhosa, Isizulu, Northern Sotho, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga.

These are further broken down into many tongues. IE. Swahili, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Laal, Shabo, Dahalo, Zulu, Berber, Songhay, Arabic, Amharic, Oromo, Xhosa, Sotho, Showa, Kongo, Fulani, Lingalo, French, Muslim, Indian, Portugese, and yes... many sign languages, and whistles, still undefined.

And that's just to name a few!!! Fantastic question!

I am not sure where the anger is coming from.... This is the united states of America. English is for the most part our first language. We are a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. In my opinion all languages other than English would be considered foreign. I am not sure why Spanish would be excluded. As you mentioned government officials, doctors, lawyers, you name the profession and you'll find that Spanish along with 100's of other languages are spoken. You can take many different languages in school also, not only Spanish. you are aware that there are 50 states, not only 5 or 6...right? The fact is the more languages you speak and or learn the better you will be. However if you only know one language, that doesn't make you any less of a person.

Before they were brought to US against their will, of course they had their own native languages - but once they became slaves, they may have been forbidden anything but English - people talking together in a language that could not be understood by the owner might be suspected of plotting against him, for example, and the way families were broken up and members sold off to other owners, slaves could have found themselves with nobody understanding their own particular dialect, so English would have gradually become more useful as a common tongue.

Here in Ireland, we have had some experience of prohibition of our native language when the English took over power, which is part of our history, and while the Irish language did not disappear completely, it was quelled pretty effectively.

Africa is made up of many countries, with different languages. Some speak French, some speak Afrikaans, which is heavily influenced by Dutch, there's Swahili, and lots of other languages.

They speak English because when they were brought to America as slaves, they were force to learn English by their masters. The hispanic people were not force to come to America as slaves, they came because they want and/or need it to, so they kept their language.

AFRICANS SPEAK WHATEVER TRIBE/COUNTRY THEY MAY BE, IN AFRICA THERE ARE DIFFERENT DIALECTS, LIKE SWAHILI, OR ENGLISH, OR OTHER RELATED DIALECTS ACORDING TO REGION. AFRICA DOESN'T NOT HAVE ONE AFRICAN LANGUAGE. WHOEVER SAID THAT- NEVER BEEN OR STUDIED. MY BOYFRIEND IS CONSIDERED AFRICAN AMERICAN BUT HE HAS A CODE OF ARMS FROM THE 13 CENTURY AND HE IS PART ENGLISH/SCOTTISH/VIKING FAMILY!!!!
