In general, it is up or out.

Also in general in the Army, the lower ranks (officer and enlisted) are young people who have a far greater needed for strength and endurance. If an old person stayed there, he would not be able to keep up and would harm the mission.

Also, until you get to the TOP THREE enlisted ranks, there really is not that much leadership involved anyway.

Lastly, turn down the promotion and you turn down a pay raise. Only a nut case would do that. Another good reason to kick them out.

If you wanna stay a private forever...just keep screwing up and you can be a private forever. There is a point when you will get kicked out of the army for not getting promoted...something about failure to advance or something like that.

Why would ANYONE want to stay a private?

well usually you are automatically promoted up to e-4, at least in the army, but if you dont want the promotion, you can always do something to get an article 15, just dont tell anyone I told you too!!! that would suck.

I aksed a very similar question regarding control of a platoon, being promoted from Cpt, to Major. the answers were and i found this to be very true, is that its an "up or out" type situation. they need you to move up becuase they constantly have new people coming in. they need experienced people in higher ranks. if you are not compliant with more money, as a reward, more control, as a reward, and they thought enough of you to give this to you, you will never move up in rank again and may be punished. not very sivierly but not fun. **HAVNT EXPERIENCED THIS YET BUT THAT IS THE SUM OF MY ANSWERS** good luck to you.

That used to be the case, but not anymore. In the 70s, they changed the rules so that, if you didn't advance after a certain time in rank, your service would be reviewed. The chance is that you could be put out if you're not good enough to advance.

You can deny your promotion warrant. But if you do that chances are that you will never be promoted again

they will be kicked out eventually. there is something called High Year Tenure.. after so many years if you have not been promoted,. you may no longer stay in.

I think a better question is why wouldnt you?
A better pay grade, more senority???
However its just a guess but when you go before the board i'm sure you could explain your reasoning to them.
