This word is very widely used in Cuba. Literally, yes, it means "penis." And it is still a very vulgar word in the country. Still, as I said, it is VERY widely used.
The word can be found in very popular phrases such as:
- "De pinga [acere]!" ~~ meaning something like "oh snap!," "goddamnit!,"darn it!," and several other English vulgar phrases that follow the same style.
- "La cosa está de pinga," ~~ meaning, "things are hard." This phrase has become a lot more popular in younger generations especially because of all the things young Cubans have had to live through. In other words, we never lived the good Soviet times.
- "Eso está bolao'/de pinga! ~~ meaning something like: "that is great!."
- "Qué pinga es ésto?" ~~ meaning: "what the hell/heck/f*** is this?
- "Qué pinga é (es)!" ~~ a very vulgar and provocative way of confronting somebody. This usually leads to a fight (as I said, very provocative). Also, most people don't use this specific phrase. Only "troublemakers" or those picking up a fight. There is no easy way of translating this, juts note that this will likely start a fight.
- "Ella/él está de pinga" ~~ When a person tell this to another person, he/she usually means that a girl/guy is not very physically attractive. This is something that people will not usually say in public, unless in a small group in which they will all trust each other. It is very offensive when said out loud and in front of the person talked about.
There are also other ways in which this word is used in Cuba specifically, but these are some of the most common ways you will hear them in the streets of Cuba (especially western Cuba - as eastern Cuba does not have the same accent and has a varied dialect than that present in western Cuba). Why I'm I telling of this? Well, I used to live in the country from my birth to my 17th birthday, so I am part of the post USSR era.
