I can't stand seeing little kids with bottles full of cola, sucking on them constantly, no wonder there is so much tooth decay about. I agree, yes you can give it to them, but if you do, then water it down. Most of these smoothies that are recommended are just as bad, yes they contain fruit, but fruit is full of sugar, so the acid will rot teeth just the same. Just make sure you brush their teeth morning and night

My brother in law and his family stayed with us a month and I could not believe their children's dietary habits! The boys are 6 and 4 years old. We made the mistake of having Dr peppers in the house. They drank an entire 12 pack between the two of them! (I might drink one can every other day.) Their parents had no problems with it what so ever. Never made them drink water, never even offered it. The 6 year old had to have some baby teeth pulled out because they were so rotted. Now I know why. My opinion on the matter is that it should be a special treat.

Why introduce it at all? Why not allow their friends to introduce it? Why encourage drinking it? I didn't drink ANY pop until i was in high school. When I was little i was given a sip here and there and didn't like it. I didn't like the carbonation. Yet when I was in high school i started to like the taste and went a little over board and had it every day for alike 6 months...woo hoo...then you know what a 24 pack lasted me 5 months.
Pop is horrible for kids, it hurts their teeth, it gives them a sugar high and worst of all it dehydrates them. Its a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE habit to introduce to your children.
I drink a pop once every few months and I am 24 years old. When i have kids I am not going to allow them to drink pop around me. At home. I am NOT nieve though, I know they are going to go to a friends house or a birthday party and have some but that's different. I am not going to have it in my house to allow them to have as they wish. Or even for a "special treat" every once in a while. It has to be an event. Its going to be incredibly rare.
I know many 20 something year olds, that do not know there are other things to drink rather then pop. Its terrible. They are trying to cut down or quit drinking it but they are having a hard time, its a hard habit to break! Why even get them in a bad habit when they are young? There are so many other "special treats" out there that aren't so bad for you. Why not give your children that instead?

I never got to have any soda until I was around 8 or 9, and then it was just a little every so often. I think that's okay. I don't like seeing a toddler with soda. I think it's disgusting. Anywhere below age five I think is too young to even be giving sips. Once he hits kindergarten, then I think maybe a little drink every now and then will work.

Once in a while is fine. I let my kids share a can of soda maybe twice a week, and then only at birthday parties.
I do think its a problem when I see a toddler drinking soda out of his bottle, or when a kid already has rotten front teeth and is still allowed to down the stuff.

there is a difference but to many parents are letting their kids eat and drink whatever they want and that is why the kids now a days are overweight. my youngest son refuses to eat his dinner with out a promise of dessert or ice cream he learned this up at his fathers and now we battle withe him every nite about eating... he says he full and when he wants dessert he is not full no more so it is a constant battle to get him to eat. giving in to your kids or giving them soda is not a bad thing once in a great while but there are bottled water and other stuff they can have to make them drink it if they want it...

(-: You are right -- soda and candy shouldn't be every-day things, but on special occasions and "sick days" they are great. A little ginger ale can settle the stomach, and a hard candy helps a sore throat.
Our food culture seems to have swung to two extremes -- the people who seem to be unable to deny themselves anything, so nothing is special anymore, and then those people who deny themselves EVERYTHING, so everything is dull and bland, 24/7. Pure sugar should be a big deal and a special treat! Lord knows, the body rejoices at it!

I have a hard time when my in-laws give my nephew iced tea, he's not even 18 mo. old. They also give my other (6-year old) nephew pop, cookies, candy, etc. I suppose a swig once in a while won't hurt, but considering all the sugar and caffeine, regular usage of pop is just asking for a eating disorder later on.

*lol* My son had to go under a general anesthetic and I was told no food for 8 hours only clear liquids (until 3 hours before). They further said the only "clear liquids" that were acceptable were apple juice and pop. My son is only 18 months. So you know once in awhile isn't going to kill anyone.
Of course my son won't drink pop or apple juice, but that's his choice.

I agree - my 5 year old drinks water or milk most of the time and a soda is a special treat.
