Recently ive noticed my cat seems to be having some problems. He is about 13-14. I notice he is not breathing normally, he has to open his mouth, espiecally atfer any form of exercise, even walking from one room to another, its almost as if he is wheezing. Also this gets worse when i pick him up (which i have obviously stopped doing for the time being) and he seems to whince in pain when i do so. Im realy worried because ive read these symptoms can mean a cat is "near death" so to speak. Is this true or is it something the vet can help with, for example respiratory problems or arthritis, all help appreciated. thanks.

Sad to say I just got back from the vet late this afternoon after having my beloved 13 year old female cat put to sleep. She started exhibiting very labored and shallow breathing along with lethargy, lack of appetite , vomiting amongst other alarming symptoms just this past week . Please get to a reliable and honest vet that will give her a thorough blood and urine analysis (expensive but worth every penny). Please do not hesitate ,go tonight ; if not the very first opportunity. Turns out my cat had suffered congestive heart failure due to hyperthyroid condition which is quite common in older cats complicated by advanced diabetes, also common in older felines. Let me know how you make out; my thoughts are with you. Good luck.

I'm sorry about your kitty. I read the other answers and everyone thinks he is near death, but I am optimistic and do not think so! i have not had a cat that long before, but I do have a chihuahua that is about 8 -9 years old and she wheezes a lot, and when I pick her up she makes noises like she in pain a bit. But she has been like this for a long time now, and she is overweight (we call her obese) so I know that has a lot to do with it.
We even took her to the vet a while back bc she wasnt feeling so good and he didnt say anything.
Is your cat overweight? Well, just to be sure I would say to take your cat to the vet but I am hoping for the best for your cat, and i dont think just bc he is out of breath means he is near death, he could just be out of shape like my chihuahua :)
Good luck and God bless!

Rather than wasting time finding advice on Yahoo Answers, I would suggest to take the cat to a vet and have him examined. If you delay, the symptoms might just get worst and it may become too late for any treatment. You are dealing with life out here and only a vet is the a person who can make a difference between life and death.

Well it's obviously not normal so why haven't you taken him to the vet already??!!!

Stop being cheap and stop procrastinating. It sounds as though it could be a heart problem. Every time you pick him up, you inadvertently squeeze air out of his lungs. In any case, the sooner you get him to the vet the quicker you will help him and the smaller the bill. Keep procrastinating and you won't have him for long. There are medicines that can assist him and alleviate his discomfort/suffering. So get off your lazy butt and stop wasting time asking unqualified strangers who have never even seen him! TO THE VET!

By the way, it IS his right guaranteed by law to receive proper care and to deny it is abuse. If you cannot properly care for a pet then you do not have any right to have one.

Your cat really needs an evaluation and senior profile done by your vet. There are many possible reasons for what is happening, and none can really be guessed at from not seeing the cat, and not being professionals.

I also have no idea if your cat is overweight, diabetic, has cancer, etc. And without seeing a vet, neither do you. Since cats are very stoic, and he winces when you pick him up, this is not something to sweep under the rug. It is not fair to him.

I have a cat nearly 13 y/o. Senior, but no where near death.

any breathing problems should be evaluated by a vet. whether its just a cold, heart disease, lung congestions, tumors, or a virus, need professional.

some things are fixable with drugs, and diet modification, some with surgery, some are not. Cats can live up to 20 years, and tho your cat is old, there may sill be some time left if you provide some care.

I wish you both good luck, and more time.

Sounds like heart trouble. Call a vet.

Normally, when a loved pet is sick, people do not waste time on the internet letting their pet suffer. They go to the vet AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I hate to tell you but it sounds like he might be at the end of his life. I would take him to the vet... they will help him if they can. If they can't help then maybe they can help him fall asleep with out any pain. I'm so sorry.....

It sounds like she is going into warmth. She is protecting her butt up in the air too, splendid? call the vet, different sensible you will possibly have toddlers working throughout. Plus she is a lot too youthful for being pregnant. it may kill her and the toddlers so i might call the vet ASAP.
