Many times the store brands are manufactured by the same companies that manufacture the name brands.

The main reason that people buy name brand food rather than store brand is advertising. Name brands are advertised much more heavily than store brands. At the store, advertising encourages the purchaser to, often unconsciously, choose the advertised brand over its competitors even if it is more expensive than the store brand.

Hello:

While it is true that store brands are alot cheaper than name brand products are,I REFUSE to compromise on certain things such as:
Jif Peanut Butter
Smucker's Jelly or Jams
Miracle Whip
Heinz Ketchup
Cottonelle Toilet Paper
Pringles Potato Chips
Green Giant canned vegetables
Fruity Pebbles and Kellogg's Frosted Mini Wheats Cereal
Eckrich Bologna and Hot Dogs
Kraft Cheese Slices
Velveeta

We do buy store brand:
Paper Towels
Paper Plates
Some store brand cereals are better than the name brand such as Marshmallow Treasures which is a Kroger brand of cereal that is better than the name brand Lucky Charms cereal is!
Kroger brand of boxed macaroni and cheese is really good

Because they think since they are paying more, they're getting "better" food.

The only things I by name brand are Dove soap and Tampax. Why compromise on things THAT important?

When I go grocery shopping, it generally takes me to about 5-6 different stores and a farmer's market. I get organic, local produce way cheaper than I've found ANYWHERE else. I live in a big enough city that this is possible, but I understand that doesn't always work for everyone.

However, I don't exactly trust Great Value (Wal-Mart's store brand) anymore. Ever since I found out that their GV milk is from cows treated with rSBT, I have since found other places to purchase everything I need. Why support a corporate monster, who could care less about the effects their supposedly wholesome products have on their consumers?!

In some cases generic brands are made by the Major manufacturers, but NOT ALWAYS. Some generics just don't cut the mustard, IMO... Think of soda's for example...

Coca cola vs. store brand cola isn't the same
Cheezits vs. Cheese squares isn't the same
Personally, I think they are a lesser quality, therefore you are getting what you pay for...
Although Costco has some great Kirkland brands that are as good if not better than the name brands. It just depends on the product...and ultimately (at least to me) whether you eat it or use it! :)

I guess the brand name is more familiar and seems better to us, even though it might be the same. some people think it is better quality, so pay the extra money for it. I know that I only buy brand names... i don't really have a reason why. i think it's just what i'm used to.

I have found that there are some store brands that are no where near as good as name brands. Some things can be bought cheaper like greenbeans and canned peaches but have you ever tried a cheap microwave popcorn?? It just aint happening. Cheap cokes take horrible. Cheap cheese isnt really cheese at all, just oil and water.

cheaper and generic store brands are not better & are of the second batch of the manufacturing which is of less quality also if there's an issue or recall i'd rather it be from the name brand

I always buy store brand, but there are some exceptions. Like Kraft mac & cheese, Velveeta, Grey Poupon, good coffee, and Potato Buds. (The Safeway brand instant potatoes taste like cardboard.)
