The VERY best language CD's are Rosetta Stone. 6 weeks and you will be able to function perfectly. fine in German society. It's a bit spendy but an EXCELLENT foreign language system of learning.

It is correct that the majority persons in Europe will probably be equipped to talk english with you. Some would present you to talk English despite the fact that you talk German. This is simply looking to be well mannered and looking to make the dialog less complicated for you. If you inform them that you're finding out and that you simply desire to talk German they will very so much recognize. On the opposite hand you have got to keep in mind that German, in comparison to English, is particularly complex to be taught. The grammar is way more difficult. But I consider finding out a brand new language is continuously some thing valued at doing. So why no longer simply provide it a take a look at?

You will get used to the sound of German as soon as you arrive there. However, I know that you will not actually need a lot of German to get around - most German people, especially our age (I assume you´re about my age) speak English fluently.

The music advice above is okay, but you will have difficulty understand Judith Holofernes sing because of the style she sings. Get a Marco Polo travel book on Germany and start with the very simple phrases they usually list in the back - it´s easy stuff such as asking for the loo, for the time, for directions, hello, good-bye, thank you etc.

German is a language that is rather easy as soon as you get the hang of it. First thing you could do is order German copies of your favourite movies - watch them in German with subtitles for a start. You need to surround yourself with a language in order to easily pick things up, so I´d really recommend a German class in an evening school or something along those lines.

Don´t worry too much - German people ADORE people speaking bad German with an English or American accent, you´ll feel comfortable in no time and pick up phrases easily.

Most people in Germany now speak many different languages, but if you still want to learn get a workbook, a german dictionary, and cd's and just follow the instructions and read the dictionary.

Blessed Be.

I have been in an Army base in Munchen
You don t have to learn nothing
evreything in the base is American
But if you feel like learning the language there r many schools over there
Better listten and hear the language before learning it

Do what the first poster said, but also get a dictionary (I like Webster's), a verb book (The Big Yellow Book of German Verbs is amazing! Order it from B&N), and listen to A LOT of German music.

I really like Wir Sind Helden (We are Heroes)--the female vocalist (main/only vocalist) reminds me A LOT of Janis Joplin. I don't know why, considering Joplin was WAY before my time (born 1990--I'm 17). But yeah.

Wir sind Helden (click on the song titles in the yellow box to hear like, minute-long clips--it's excellent! I like "Ist Das So," "Soundso," and so many others! "Ode...an die arbeit" is also a top fav!):

give him literature books on german.
get him everything that you can. German-English dictionary for example. they can be very helpful. or if he has a deutch(german) speaking friend have him ask for an hour of his time teaching him the basics.

German is really easy when you get used to it.
good day.
