Pilate asked the crowds, "Which one do you want me to release to you - Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?" Why did he phrase it like that? Why didn't he just say Barabbas or Jesus?

What? was right in his answer - Barabbas' first name was also Jesus. It was taken out by the early church because they didn't want their Savior's name associated with a criminal. He has the ten points as soon as I figure out how to give them to him.....lol

First of all Pilate did not say "Messiah", he said "King of the Jews", and this Pilate also wrote in Arabic, Hebrew and another language and placed it on the Cross above Jesus' head. Some crosses displayed today still have this title as it was written then "I N R I". Also there were others with the name of Jesus around in those times. Pilate wanted to be sure that he was not to blame for the death of the Son of God, and he also wanted to please Ceasar, who was the King of the Roman Empire at the time. This is the reason he phrased it so carefully.

Pilate wanted them to ask for Jesus's release. That is why he phrased it like this.
According to the writers of all 4 gospels, Pilate tried to get the crowd to ask for Jesus's release, but some others stirred up the crowd so that they asked for Barabbas's release.
Then Pilate said that the matter was out of his hands.
He did not want to be responsible.

I think he phrases it like this becasue he knew who Jesus was and did not want to take the responsibilty of releasing Barabbas himself, so he gave the crowd the decision to make. Deep down he know that Jesus was the Son of God.

Because the original phrasing was edited later to say that.
Barabbas' first name "Jesus" was in earlier versions of the gospel but removed without explanation. There is also some indication that other passages were changed at the same time.

I dont think he really understood why the Jews hated this guy so much and wanted him dead. He offers up a clear criminal and they still chose to execute Jesus. I think he was just a little perplexed as to why they would choose a guy that really hadnt done anything wrong and many did consider to be the messiah.

Because Barabbas means "Son of the father"...
Bar = son of.
Abba = father.

The Bible says he knew the Jews had delivered him because they were envious of the attention he was getting, Jesus was about to remove the Pharisees power.

For my money Pilate disliked the Jewish high Priest and his cohorts and said this to annoy them.
