We have Jails that are for the short time offenders.
Then we also have State as well as Federal Prisons, these are for the long time offenders that are doing years.

It is a place where people who are charged with crime are held for trial. Once convicted of a crime, the punishment may be more jail time. Some people think of jail as being a county or city facility while prison is a state or national facility. Though other people use prison and jail interchangeably.
I really wish that giving a thumbs down required an explanation. I have been careful to be factual and yet some unknowing knee jerk has popped the thumbs down. If you don't know what you're talking about, then leave off with the thumbs downs, -- please.

I have heard it refered to as jail and prison but remember that the U.S is a huge country, so in East coast in U.S people say "soda" while in West coast some people refer to it as "pop."
I would not be surpurised if there is another name for jail and prison

In the old days in Cincinnati, if you got out of jail, and somebody asked "Where you been?" We'd answer "I was in Atlanta"
Guys who had also, at one time or another, been "in Atlanta" knew what you meant. Everyone else just thought you had been visiting Atlanta, Georgia.

A jail.
There are also prisons -- which are jails designed to hold people for a long period of time.
Some places also call them 'detention centers' or 'correctional facilities' -- depending on who runs them,
