Children shouldn't be measured against a "norm" at this point. It's too easy to start worrying about them. Just read to him alot and love him more and talk to him. The pediatrician is aware of what the minimum he should be doing is and is keeping a close eye on it.
I understand your concern, I was the same way with my niece. I constantly compared her to my daughter (only six months older but about 1 1/2 years ahead developmentally). My son and my niece are very similar and slow moving to talk and walk. The communication is difficult with my 18 month old. There is a lot of pointing and grunting and frustration, for both of us. But as long as my pediatrician says he's within the "normal range" I am not worrying about it.

My son is 24 months and, from what I've seen with him and his little friends, boys tend to develop language skills a bit later than girls. My son only said "Mama," "Daddy," "kitty," "no" and "hi" until he was 22 months old. We were so freaked out we took him to 4 different pediatricians and an audiologist. We scheduled an evaluation with Early Intervention because we were convinced he had a developmental disorder or speech delay.
Then, at 22 and a half months, he started trying to say every word he heard. He went from 5 words to more than I can remember in less than a month. Now he can count to 5 and has started saying phrases like "We gonna go?" and "You ok?" It's still a little hard to understand him, but I know he's making progress so I'm no longer worried about his speech.
It's really easy to compare your child (or godchild) to other kids, but you just can't do that. You'll only worry yourself sick. All kids develop in their own way and have their own individual style of learning. Give it time.

Every child is different and will achieve new things at different times. I wouldn't worry about him, as long as the doctors say he is developing well then he is okay.
example. at 18mths my son had been walking for 8 months. He was talking in 2 to 3 word sentences. Knew to count to 5 on his own and attempted the alphabet, he sang along to The wiggles and Hi5 (have it all on video).
But my nephew .. was only walking for 4 months, could only say 4 words in total.
But now that my nephew is just over 25mths old all of a sudden he is talking in 2 or 3 word sentences, playing game-boy, plays on Dora games on the computer all by himself and even plays an old Nintendo 64.
A child will reach their own milestones in their own time and I don't thing comparing them to other kids is a good idea, it makes you anxious thinking your child is slow. I am sure there are a few things that doctors can tell you must be reached at certain times of a babies development but other things will happen in time.

Keep half an eye on the "2 year old milestones." You can find them on Babycenter.com or other web sites including the AAP. Yes, all kids are different. But if there is a problem it is better to get on it early. Some problems have easy remedies, and others do not. Just keep in mind that you are the mom and if you sense there is a problem please do not let anyone talk you out of it. Help is available through early intervention, or your school district free of charge.

All children vary so try not to worry too much. I'm sure if there are any problems the childs health visitor would pick up on it. Have a look in the babies development record (red book recieved at birth) and this has some basic milestones in.

Well... I think 6-8 words is okay for this age... too bad one of the word is *hit.
My daughter is just about 18 months and can run... say about a dozen words... points to body parts... sings songs (in her language)

Go to babycenter.com. Just remember kids are all different. My son walked at 8 months but was way behind in speaking but is almost 3 now and won't stop talking.

Don't!! They are vary incredibly. My 19 month old has about a dozen words now - seems to be trying to say a sentence (it clearly makes sense to him but not us!) He does shape sorting well now and is just starting to recognise colours and things in books.

My grandson is 20 months and is able to say words like mummy, daddy, papa, juice. no.
he is now starting to string words together but to be honest its hard to make out some of them.
he is sleeping in his own bed from 7pm til8am without getting up.
he is managing to feed himself most things although its sometimes messy.
Don't fret about him he will do things in his own time
