Yes people who think like that are worshiping a false god. They have made up their own god in their own mind to suit their self. He is not the True God of the bible. I am glade you asked this question, because I just had a battle with my in-laws about this last week. They believe that when a person dies they become an angel; they also believe that God is a loving and forgiving God only and all people go to heaven when they die. This is not the God of the bible; therefore it is a false belief.

I don't know if it's idolatry but ... While Christians affirm unequivocally that God is essentially good and loving, it must be emphasized that complementary to these attributes is the characteristic of justice. A loving being that ignored evil or that treated bad acts and good acts equally would not be good. Hence, if God is good, then God is also just - he must treat evil as evil. So, if any creatures merited the existence of hell, then God could remain essentially good and loving by giving them justice, even if that means sending some creatures to hell.

Good question.
Are the New-Age Christians (God is only good and love) worshiping a false idol? I am not sure...
ADD: The idea of God as the abusive father and his worshipers "justifying" his brutality has been a popular subject of discussion lately.
"The Canaanites fell on a door nob. God would not have had them killed..."
Yeah right.

You can't have just the part of God you want. You have to take all of Him. He is loving and merciful, but He IS God.
Accept Jesus. Take the free gift that is offered.

The one that rejects the doctrines of hell, judgement, and God's working in the lives of all, have a fake "god" that doesn't exist.
In the Bible, Jesus is God, and He is grace, mercy, forgiveness, love, compassion, and judge as well.

You know, there's no proof any god exists. And as far as the Christian God specifically, you are wasting your time by trying to decipher and interpret the paradoxes inherent in "His" definition. The Christian God is a self-contradiction and therefore cannot exist.

Justice IS mercy.
It is merciful if you punish a small child for playing with matches, because are saving him from torching himself later in life.
Same goes for us
