It depends on what state you live in and what insurance carrier you use. My credit sucks and I have full coverage for $80/mo. (Nationwide).

you can but it is expensive. This is so unfair. They say that people with bad credit are more likely to have an accident so they use that to charge more money. You could probably come up with statistics that link hair color to accident frequency. Just another way of screwing people with bad credit.
I got a company that insured me at a low rate because I was a safe driver. 20 years no tickets no accidents. A year later they ran a credit check and doubled my premiums. Ought to be a law against that. By the way, I made every payment on time every time and still no tickets and no accidents.

If you're in California, they don't use credit score. You CAN get insurance through higher risk companies like Progressive, Geico, or Leader Infinity - it just costs more.

AGENCIES have no room to be lenient, these are COMPANY rules.

Leader will actually give you a policy without checking your credit - but it will automatically give you the HIGHEST rates they have, assuming you have horrible credit.

It all depends. If you are just looking for a general quote for how much your going to pay, sometimes they won't. But if you decide to go w/the insurence and get a more accurate quote they may do a "soft hit" on your credit. It's not exactly an inquiry but obviously you don't want a whole lot of those either.

You may not like it, but insurers have found it statistically true that people who are unreliable in financial matters tend to be higher insurance risks. Thus, they check. You can probably get insurance, but it will cost you more if your credit is bad.
